Review: Joel Christian did it again with his follow up to his hit single, “GEMINI.” “Rise From The Grave” has everything you’d expect from Joel and more! It has his signature horror aesthetic and lyrics that you can’t get out of your head, but this time, he included a killer guitar solo! That’s not the only thing that’s different with the song. The song sounds like 80s pop and dance music challenged synth-wave to a boogie competition, and they got tangled only to merge into a mythical being that only the Dark Wizard of pop could wield. It’s clear the Joel Christian has been studying the masters like, Gesaffelsteim, Carpenter Brut, and Daniel Deluxe before attempting to control the beast that is “Rise From The Grave,” their influences are apparent in the tune.
The song starts with an electric piano/synth riff that feels like it was ripped from a horror film. Then, the bass drum hits building the energy to an organ playing a chord progression. If the riff didn’t make you feel like you were listening to dark-pop, then the organ progression leaves you with no doubt. The energy builds with a swell, and then to silence. Joel breaks the silence with “You better run away,” then the song crashes in with high energy. The beat hits you the right way and makes you want to dance and, of course, Joel’s vocals make you want to sing along. It’s tough to follow his advice of running away with dance music like that. The lyrics have horror content and describe a person reanimating and rising from the grave, as the name of the song suggests.
Throughout the song, you hear Daniel Deluxe’s and Carpenter Brut’s influences with the electronics and synths. If you’re a fan of Gesaffelsteim, Carpenter Brut, and Daniel Deluxe, but like dark, horror-inspired lyrics, and beats that make you want to dance yourself to the grave, you need Joel Christian’s “Rise From The Grave” in your playlist before you expire!
