Honyock – #13 – Review

Honyock is back with their latest EP called #13. Is it unlucky? I don’t know. All I know is that we’re lucky to have it! Hear it here!

Honyock is an indie rock band whose music sounds like it’s on magic mushrooms. Starting around 2010 in Sacramento, the band released their debut LP, El Castillo, on July 20th, 2018. The band is Spencer and Mason Hoffman, bassist, Tyler Wolter, and drummer, Christian Midthun.

#13 has exactly what you’d expect from Honyock, but with some musical growth
since El Castillio. Don’t get me wrong, their music still sounds like
what being on magic mushrooms should sound like, but cleaner. I don’t know how
to explain it, but the recording quality on this one is clearer. However, El
Castillio
still
sounds excellent.

With four tracks that’ll have you chilling through bat country are what you
need during these uncertain times. We don’t know the next thing that 2020 could
throw at us, but at least we know these boys deliver.

The first track is called “Sanity of Man,” and it hits you hard with
that keyboard and the bass locks you in a sweet groove. “I am a victim of
weaponized love,” are some notable lyrics.

The second track is called “Unlucky #13,” and it’s a slow one.
It’s mournful and full of melancholy. The vocals repeat “Unlucky #13”
at parts, driving the point home.

“The Quarry” is definitely going to be a fan favorite if it isn’t
already. The song is an exciting way to tell a story of being bored and
watching life pass you by.

“World of Mine” is somber and soulful, as if they touched on a
different musical genre, but making it their brand of peyotetonk. The song is a
great way to close out an impressive EP.

If you like the music of the 60s and 70s, you need Honyock’s #13 on your
playlist now!
