Promise Game – I’m Not Listening – Review

Promise Games tells us “I’m Not Listening” in their new track, but it’s not instructions! We’re listening to “I’m Not Listening,” and so should you!

Promise Game is lyrically relevant, creatively bound, and harmonically emphasized. Southern NH-based Promise Game was formed in early 2020 as a way for five long-time friends to get back into the music scene after being gone for some time. The band’s debut EP It Won’t Be Long Now. . . introduced a sound that strayed from the pop-punk “norm,” mixing many different styles and genres into a cohesive collection of tracks, including fan favorites “Take It Back,” Sheryl Crow cover “If It Makes You Happy” and “Thanks for the Anxiety.”

After great reception from listeners, multiple radio/podcast features, and strong reviews, Promise Game set out to take their music to a whole new level. In the Summer of 2021, PG released “Any Reason to Party” ft. Joshua Herzer of Lions Lions. The song quickly gained a lot of traction and exposure within the world of alternative music, being featured by outlets such as Scene Daddy, New Noise Magazine, and many more. In just a few months after the release, the band was playing for live audiences throughout New England, supporting national tours featuring bands such as Driveways, Goalkeeper, FRND CRCL, Big Smile, and other up-and-coming groups.

On the heels of their latest successful release, “Sleeping Weather,” the group was determined to make their next EP something genuinely unique and special. With the first single off that EP, “I’m Not Listening,” it’s clear that the group is ready for the next chapter in their story and won’t be taking the foot off the gas pedal any time soon.

CTRL+Space’s band of 2021, Promise Game, returns with another banger called “I’m Not Listening.” Despite the track’s name, it’ll get your attention and you’ll want to keep repeatedly listening to this unique piece of aural art. To summarize how “I’m Not Listening” sounds, imagine putting 80s Pop, modern Pop-Punk, and early 2000s Emo into a blender, add a dash of Alternative, a sprig of piano, beautiful vocals, put it on high, and serve it up with a garnish of relatable lyrics. That concoction is a winning blend completely exclusive to Promise Game. Try and look for a band that sounds like Promise Game; we’ll wait.
We caught up with Promise Game to ask what the song was about, and they described it as, “‘I’m Not Listening’ is about relationships that are out of balance and coming to an end. Whether it’s friends, family, or professional – a relationship lacking nurture and appreciation will eventually fray at both ends.” Who hasn’t experienced that? Have you ever been around someone who grates you so much that you’d do as this line from the song says? “I’d Fake a heart attack to get you off my back.” Don’t tell me you’ve never thought to do that before talking to someone that fills you with doom and gloom.
“I’m Not Listening” will undoubtedly intrigue fans of Pop-Punk, Emo, and Alternative Rock. Their distinctive sound sets them apart from the pack, and if you haven’t heard “I’m Not Listening,” then we recommend you correct that mistake and play it on repeat. Add it to your playlist now!
