Anndy Negative – When We Were Young – Single Review

Anndy Negative asks if he wrote the next Emo anthem with his latest single, “When We Were Young,” and we say he did!

Anndy Negative is a total weirdo! A musician and YouTuber from Ottawa, Canada, Anndy makes 90s inspired Emo Punk with a fun theatrical twist. His guitar-driven music steals openly from modern pop with storytelling lyrics that toe the line between relatable sarcasm and dark irony.

Teaching himself to play guitar at thirteen, by seventeen Anndy had recorded his first songs with a cheap computer microphone. After a decade performing in a Horror Punk band and receiving the title “Mr. Negative,” Anndy struck out on his own to tell different kinds of stories.

Anndy Negative is a creative force to be reckoned with, and his first release was a gapless rock opera. According to Shawn Thicke of Bucketlist, “It takes a massive amount of balls to make your first album a Rock Opera.” Since then, Anndy has been releasing new singles every two months. He also releases weekly videos on his YouTube channel about creating music, telling stories about his songs, and music industry advice.

“We are the princes and princesses of the glory days” is a standout line in Anndy Negative’s “When We Were Young” single. Never has a single ever made me feel like a prince before! Thanks, Anndy! With songwriting like that, it makes sense that Anndy was given CTRL+Space’s best Pop-Punk Halloween song of 2021! This Emo Anthem was released a few weeks after the announcement of the When We Were Young Festival, and “When We Were Young” feels like the love child of all those bands. “When We Were Young” has everything thing an elder Emo and young Emo kid could love, making it a new Emo anthem. Anndy Negative’s “When We Were Young” has memorable hooks that’ll have you singing until your eyeliner runs, fast beats to headbang to until your extensions fall off, or when your back goes out, whichever comes first. Anndy Negative has incredible theatrics throughout the song, giving it drama like in a My Chemical Romance song. If you are a fan of any of the bands announced in the When We Were Young Festival, you need Anndy Negative’s “When We Were Young” in your playlist!
