Kurt Baker – “I’ve been writing a lot of songs with my bandmates lately. Usually, it all starts with a riff or a little vocal melody line.” – Interview

Kurt Baker took the time to answer our questions and tell us more about his music. Let’s see what he has to say!

First off, What’s up with your name? Is there a story behind it?

Well, basically it’s my legal name. Kurt is my first name, and Baker is my last name. If you wanna find out my middle name, it’s somewhere on the internet! I’d like to also thank my parents for gifting me this great name. No, I’m not actually a baker of bread, for all you curious ones thinking to ask!!!

Tell us about your musical past, would you tell us about your early years?

I had a band called The Leftovers. We had a great thing going on for a while. Pop/Punk sound and we actually had a pretty good chance of taking things to the next level, but unfortunately, things didn’t work out due to situations out of my control, and the whole demise of the group was actually a bit traumatic for me. Luckily I took a negative situation and made it positive by starting a solo career and writing, recording, and touring with the great group of friends I have now.

How would you describe your sound?

Punk influenced Pop Rock with some BIG HOOKS and RIFFS. Songs that would sound great in soundtracks to movies like “Superbad” or “Road Trip” or “Bring It On”.

Which artists have the biggest influence on your sound?

Cheap Trick, The Beatles, Nick Lowe, Kylie Minogue, Rick James

What’s the last song you listened to?

Tv Addict  – Pupajim. REGGAE

What’s your source for hearing new music?

Spotify… say what you will about em’ make it easy to discover new music with their playlists.

Who is your dream producer?

Tom Werman, Jeff Lynne, Eric Valentine

If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?

Noel or Liam Gallagher

What led you to music, and what motivates you to keep making it?

As the great Miles Davis once said: “I love music, it’s in my head. I can’t get it out”. Music found me at a young age, I can never escape it.

Tell us about the songwriting process. How does it all come together?

I’ve been writing a lot of songs with my bandmates lately. Usually, it all starts with a riff or a little vocal melody line. But honestly, there are only so many ways one can write a song and I’m sure my way isn’t much different than other artists. The only difference is that we always sprinkle a bit of magical fairy dust on the finished song so it comes out nice and shiny once it’s out on the record 🙂

How do you connect with your audience? What is the easiest way for them to
connect with you?

I love to give it all when I’m on stage performing to the crowd. Acknowledgment is a huge thing. Speaking directly, singing with your heart out to them… It’s all about creating that magical energy from the stage and letting it flow out onto the people like a big wave of excitement and emotion. The easiest way for the audience to connect with us? Buy a ticket and come to the gig! We’ll do the rest.

What’s next for you?

The new digital single is out this Friday, April 14th. The track is called “Secrets”, it’s a retro soul / power pop groover. After that, the first single from my upcoming full-length will be out in May. That song is called “Anchors Up”, we’ll have it on a 45 vinyl single. The music video is super dope too! We shot it in Spain. Really fun. I’ll be playing Chicago in May as well at the Cobra Lounge. It’ll be great to be back in the Windy CIty.

Anything else you’d like to add or let us know about?

My awesome record label, Wicked Cool Records will be releasing my full-length album this fall. It’s the best thing I’ve done yet and I’m excited for you all to hear it! Peace and love  –  Kurt
