Free Friends – Broken Bones – Review

Free Friends are back with an amazing new track “Broken Bones” will sooth your inner scene kid that’s full of angst.

Ben DeHan of Free Friends wrote “Broken Bones” as a letter to his younger self when he was at his absolute lowest. The year was 2008, and the then-twenty-year-old Ben DeHan got the gig of a lifetime. He got to play the Warped Tour during the scene’s heyday, but something was wrong. Ben was living the dream of playing in front of thousands of people who loved the music, but Ben DeHan felt utter isolation. He experienced his first panic attack on top of the fear and crippling self-doubt. The words of “Broken Bones” were precisely what Ben needed to hear at the time. Ben DeHan became the hero his younger self needed.

“Broken Bones” was produced by Sam Pura, who worked with acts like The Story So Far and State Champs. “Broken Bones” is the final track on Free Friend’s upcoming EP, and it has been described as drawing you in with Pop-Punk sensibilities while littered with LoFi synth tones, catchy cello melodies, and emotional lyrics that’ll make you want to sing along at the top of your lungs.

“Broken Bones” is an incredibly infectious tune that will uplift you out of your trying times. Free Friends are the heros we need when we get too Emo. Ben DeHan described the song as making the listener feel inspired, understood, and that everything will be okay. He’s right, things feel better already! Fans of Machine Gun Kelley, Angels & Airwaves, Water Parks, The 1975, The Band Camino, and Valley would find this tune inspiring and uplifting. If you’re feeling down, placing “Broken Bones” in your place will put a smile on your face!

Bio:

The pop punk trio Free Friends, consisting of husband and wife Ben and Lauren DeHan along with drummer Gil Perez, have crafted the most jaw-dropping set of songs to hit the pop punk scene in years. Collaborating with Matt Malpass (blink-182, Magnolia Park), Matt Squire (Panic! At The Disco), and Sam Pura (State Champs), the group has created a unique sound that falls somewhere between blink-182 and Waterparks, accompanied by cello. Their upcoming EP features collaborations with artists such as Hit The Lights, glimmers, and Makeout, and with national tour dates and festival appearances in the works, Free Friends is ready to explode onto the scene.

Their dual vocals and emotionally charged lyrics are reminiscent of Taking Back Sunday’s anthemic hooks while minimalist verses that could’ve been written by Blink-182, are complemented by poignant cello leads comparable to Yellowcard’s violin. It’s a unique yet definitively pop punk sound that connects and builds upon every era of the genre.

Their latest release, “Last Flight,” produced and mixed by Bryan Czap (The Dangerous Summer) and Matt Malpass, is an emo/pop-punk anthem that sounds like blink-182 and The 1975 co-wrote a song for a John Hughes film. Its upbeat tempo, catchy melodies, and synth-pop vibes contrast with lyrics that tackle tough topics like anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. Don’t miss out on the excitement and energy of Free Friends – just hit play.
