Jenny Kern took some time out to tell us about her music and her songwriting process. Let’s see what she has to say!
First off, What’s up with your name? Is there a story behind it?
*No story for the band name, just wanted to be as real as possible so I stuck to my name.
Tell us about your musical past, would you tell us about your early years?
Honestly I’ve just been a lifelong consumer of music. Absorbed and played since I was a kid. I feel like I’ve grown up with and through music. When I was younger I learned piano by ear, played a little guitar and saxophone but didn’tr eally start singing until I was in my 20’s. I feel like I’m constantly still learning not only from a technical standpoint but with how it affects me.
How would you describe your sound?
I’d say my sound is probably honest dreamy indie pop. Although I’m never one to shy away from exploring sounds from other genres and sonic spaces.
Which artists have the biggest influence on your sound?
There are so many artists that have and continue ot influence my sound. There’s singer songwriters that changed my perspective on music like Sarah McLachlan, Annie Lennox and Dido. As well as bands like Fleetwood Mac or even the likes of artists such as Sade. But right now I’m really inspired by the music of The 1975 and Chelsea Cutler.
What’s the last song you listened to?
If I were to check my Spotify playlist right now I think the last song I listened to would be Break for You by Valley or The Dress by Dijon.
What’s your source for hearing new music?
I’m always looking to find new artists to check out. Whether that’s Discover Weekly or Indie Pop on Spotify or if it’s trusting a friends advice and going to a show in the city. I’m always amazed by how much talent is out there.
Who is your dream producer?
I think right now my dream producer would be Mike Crossey (The 1975, Fickle Friends, LANY)
If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?
I’d love to work with Dizzy, Fickle Friends or Chelsea Cutler
Tell us about the songwriting process. How does it all come together?
Honestly I really don’t have a clear cut process for songwriting, and it’s been that way for a long time. At the moment, I think creativity should be a little messy. I think collaborating is a magical thing and people should be as open minded as possible in the making of music. Maybe I’m doing it wrong, if this is even something you can do wrong, but for now this seems to work for me!
How do you connect with your audience? What is the easiest way for them to connect with you?
I think making music is incredible but it’s nothing until you can be in the room performing live to fans. There’s something special about being in the moment and sharing a song through real human connection. But when I can’t play shows or I’m not on tour I just hope that people can take something from the music. Whether that’s a sense of mutual understanding, new love for a song or a moment, or maybe they feel like they’ve discovered something within themselves, it’s my hope that people listen to my music and feel less alone. That they’re not going home empty-handed. I also pride myself on having a very vulnerable stay open with all my fans. They are the reason I get to do what I do and I’ll never take that for granted.

What’s next for you?
I’ve got a few more singles and an EP coming this year. I’ve also started the writing process for even more music after that. Right now I’m just absorbing every moment I have with the process and working on building the best live show with my team for upcoming tours.
Anything else you’d like to add or let us know about?
My music comes from my personal experiences, feelings, moments, and people I’ve met. I’m just grateful that I have the opportunity to create and share how I feel about something, somewhere or someone. I can’t wait to see how everything continues to grow and evolve and what’s to come next.
