Meet Danjul: The Cinematic Pop Visionary

1. Moosic: Do you have a story behind your artist name?

Danjul: Yes. For about four years I had no idea what I wanted my artist name to be. One night I had a dream, like God was speaking to me. I woke up and started pulling letters from my first name and birth month. I took D A N from my name and J U L from July and created Danjul. It had a nice, powerful ring to it. At first I considered calling myself “Darc Angel” with a C instead of a K. So in a way, Danjul still sounds like a mix of that dark and angelic energy.

2. Moosic: Tell us a bit about your music journey. How has it shaped you?

Danjul: My journey has been incredibly hard. I have wanted to give up more times than I can count but something in me won’t let me. I’ve met a lot of the wrong people who took advantage of me and it left my family skeptical of the industry. I’ve been pushing since 2008. When you come from nothing and life keeps throwing struggles your way, it’s hard to hold on. But I’ve learned to stay true to myself without giving in to the pressure of chasing trends. These days it’s not about talent, it’s about gimmicks. I’m not here for that. I’m here for the music.

3. Moosic: How would you describe your sound to someone unfamiliar with it?

Danjul: It’s pop with a cinematic touch. I love the art of storytelling and I love to dance. Every track is built to take listeners on a journey. I want you to feel something. My music has layers of emotion blended with movement. I draw a lot of inspiration from Danny Elfman. I want my music to feel like a movie you can move to.

4. Moosic: What drew you to the genre you’re in?

Danjul: Pop has always been my favorite. It’s universal. I also love R and B. My biggest influence is Michael Jackson and I hope to create the kind of music that reaches people the way his did. Pop gives me the space to blend styles and emotions into something larger than life.

5. Moosic: What inspires you to write music?

Danjul: Pain. When I’m sad I write my best songs. That’s when I dig the deepest and find the truth. Everything I write is personal. I do all my own lyrics, arrange all my vocals, and layer my own harmonies. That’s the part I love most. Creating from the inside out.

6. Moosic: Tell us about your current project.

Danjul: My debut single “Dirty Playground” dropped May 16 through WHOMAG and Sony. It was produced by Nathan Bankston and mixed and mastered by Logan Ryan. I wrote the entire thing myself. It’s a dance-driven club anthem about betrayal and heartbreak. I wanted to capture what it feels like to have your heart broken but still find the strength to get back up and dance through it. It’s moody, aggressive, emotional, and unforgettable.

7. Moosic: What do you want listeners to take away from your music?

Danjul: I want people to escape. To feel something deep and real. Music should take you somewhere else, even just for a few minutes. I want listeners to hear my music and feel understood, feel seen, and feel lifted.

8. Moosic: Who are your top three favorite artists right now?

Danjul: That’s tough. But Brandy is my number one. She’s my Whitney. Her voice is flawless. I love Nicki Minaj. I want to collab with her and have her use both her Barbie and Roman voices. And of course Michael Jackson. He’s always the blueprint. I’m also listening to a lot of Ariana Grande lately. Her voice is unreal. I love her and Cynthia in Wicked. And of course Britney Spears and The Weeknd. I just named like ten, didn’t I?

10. Moosic: What’s next for you?

Danjul: Right now I’m focused on promoting “Dirty Playground” and preparing for my second single. I just shot a 14-page fashion editorial including the cover. I’m looking forward to performing live and connecting with the right management to take things to the next level.

11. Moosic: Anything else you’d like to share?

Danjul: If you have a big booty, make sure to twerk five times a day in the mirror. It keeps the energy flowing! But seriously, thank you to everyone who has supported me or even doubted me. You all motivate me to keep going.

To my mom, I love you so much. I hope I make you proud. To my brother and my nieces Aria and Brandy, I love you with all my heart. To my best friend Raj, thank you for always keeping me grounded. To my producer Nathan Bankston, thank you for sticking with me and creating something meaningful. To my beautiful grandma in heaven, I hope you’re watching. I miss you every second.
