Producer William J. Sullivanreturns with yet another seismic collaboration, this time with LA Indie Rap giants Paris Texas. The track explores the struggles of balancing personal life with a “successful career” while also coming to the realization that “making it” may not be what it seems. The outcome is a beautiful, melancholic track with comforting synths, classic breaks, heavy bass and heavier emotion. The single arrives alongside its official video, out today.
Right from the jump, Louie Pastel delivers a hook that most have probably felt at some point; ”Shout out to my ex, sorry for the stress, swear I did my best.”About the song, Sullivan says, “I love these guys and knew this project wouldn’t be whole without them. We’ve worked together for over six or seven years now and have experienced success (2023’s Full-Length, “Mid-Air”) as well as some personal hardships together. I always feel a synergy with Louie and Felix, which is why I’m guessing a lot of these lyrics really touched on some things for me that they probably didn’t even realize.”A DIFFERENT VIBE“Must Be Nice” is a switch-up from the crew’s past work. Fresh off of Tyler, the Creator’s CHROMAKOPIA Tour Paris Texas shows up being full and present. The track wraps you up like a warm hug, letting you know, “everything’s going to be alright” as opposed to kicking you in the stomach and slapping you in the face like past efforts. Further in, Louie P. reflects on the struggles of getting to this point with the juxtaposition that this life isn’t real. Felix takes the 2nd verse and comes at it with a reassuring tone and a warning to watch how you move and how you’re perceived. “Weapon of opinion, that’s a heavy sword, alright. So when you use it, just be careful who you hit, ok.”Sullivan’s production ties everything together with soft-sounding keys, smooth drum breaks and fills and a supportive low end. The track is ever evolving, syrupy and simplistic, helping keep the focus on the MCs and their story.
William J. Sullivan is a Long Beach, CA-based producer, mixer, and writer whose credits include Kid Cudi, Rosalía, Phoebe Bridgers, Paris Texas, Denzel Curry, and Selena Gomez. Beginning his career at Philadelphia’s Studio 4 before founding Wreckin’ Joint Productions in New York, Sullivan has become known for fusing heavy, textural sound design with raw, human emotion — drawing equally from metal, hip-hop, classical, and experimental electronics.
