Covers of wildly popular songs are, at best, a hit-or-miss experience – especially while saddled up at a bar trying to figure out how a pint of domestic draft suddenly costs $9. In those rare instances when bands genuinely infuse their own style into a previously recorded (and globally recognized) song, it becomes more than a single-serve sing-along. The Spuds Mackenzies have taken one of the biggest hits of the 2020s and punked it up with their own brand of gritty, greasy rock, and brewed up a refreshing new flavour of Chappell Roan’s “Pink Pony Club”.
Named after a short-lived but extensive Bud Light marketing campaign featuring a bull terrier with the same name, The Spuds Mackenzies have recorded and released a staple of their live sets to the masses. Known for their energetic punk-infused rock style, their choice of playing “Pink Pony Club” was not for the likes of the world-at-large, but to raise one friend’s spirits.
Guitarist/vocalist Chris explains: “A close friend of ours was in the hospital having been diagnosed with cancer and PPC [Pink Pony Club] was her favourite song…we learned it on the spot live and the reaction was so fun we’ve played it live ever since. Recording it feels like a small tribute to her, we still love her and she’s always on our mind.”

Playing with purpose over popularity adds a new depth to the Spuds’ rendition of this global smash hit, and they continue to bring the loud, fast, and fun reputation that they have built. Not to be pigeon-holed as a one-shot cover band, The Spuds Mackenzies released their debut EP Pillow Talk in 2024, and a string of singles in 2025.
As mentioned before, a factor that sets The Spuds Mackenzies’ cover above the many others is how much of themselves they’ve put into it. Adding almost 90 seconds to the original’s run time, including a guitar break, and yes, a longer sing-along section. There is no doubt that this cover kicks a live show into a higher gear, and hopefully The Spuds Mackenzie keep on dancing.

The Spuds Mackenzies’ bass driven songs pay homage to their influences, delivered with pure love rather than aggression. Loud, fast, but also nice.
