Making Peace with the Past: Mars Aspen releases new single “baby teeth”

Beneath the sweet-on-the-surface tones of Mars Aspen’s latest single “baby teeth” is a staggering depth of emotional intelligence, spiritual fortitude, and artistry. Expertly balancing their dynamic indie-folk instrumentation with intensely human lyrics, Aspen has penned a uniquely personal song that offers space for others to connect and share the journey.

Recording and releasing their sprawling first EP in orbit! from their basement in 2022, Mars Aspen has continued to synthesize their lived experiences into lush and accessible songs that shine a light in dark times. The bedroom-pop/indie folk tones serve as an unassuming vehicle for their rich and powerful storytelling that invites listeners to reflect, recognize, and replay with appreciation.

As the second single from their forthcoming EP of the same name, “baby teeth” is a meditation on the effects that pre-established ‘rites of passage’ from childhood to adulthood have on our development as humans. What might be generally accepted as “…a part of growing up”, leaves an everlasting mark that isn’t always visible. “baby teeth” explores the gap between compliance and truth, and how it is a dangerous space that people unwittingly fall into. Aspen says the song is about “how childhood influences the present and how things I have learned as a child have affected thoughts I continue to have. Towards the end of the song also resigns to the fact that I have to make peace with the past and continue moving forward.”

A relatively new talent, Mars Aspen is quickly establishing themselves as a versatile and engaging songwriter and performer. Their talent for storytelling and sharing spaces in their songs for others to see themselves is a genuinely warming trait.

The baby teeth EP drops February 6 via Twin Fang Records with an EP release show scheduled for February 4 at Ottawa’s Rainbow Bistro.
