Deeper Than A Daydream: Cape Crush release new single “Place Memory”.

Massachusetts power-emo outfit Cape Crush share their second single of the year and encapsulates the ethos and vibrancy of the band. Released today, “Place Memory” is a sonic daydream that plays out like an art house film with a nostalgia-inducing soundtrack. Cape Crush bears the weight of reality and its crossroads with a  depth only mined through lived experience.

“Place Memory” is the second single and title track from the band’s highly anticipated album due out May 1. Built on a soaring guitar riff and vocal harmonies galore, the latest single allows the allegorical lyrics to float effortlessly from start to end. On paper, the weighty subject matter of the lyrics should be paired with minor chords and a healthy dose of existential dread – but Cape Crush have their own recipe. Inspired by advice columns about making bold life choices and interpreting it through fabricated memories has made for an almost whimsical story that leaves room for the listener to feel part of.

“I went through a lot of title iterations on this song, and eventually landed on ‘Place Memory’ because I love the concept of it, and it reminded me a lot of what the advice columnist was describing as a small comfort on impossible choices,” Vocalist Ali Lipman concludes. “It felt like a memorable theme for the album. Whereas, many of the songs on Place Memory have lyrics that are quite personal to me, this track is a bit more metaphoric. I hope listeners find their own meaning in it.”

Cape Crush are part of a larger community that has survived the elements of 3-day long outdoor festivals, secretly slides arch support pads into their Chucks, and doing their best to thrive as adults in exceptionally uncertain times. Where classic emo was about living in the feelings, this new class of bands bring with them a seasoned knowledge and capacity to share advice through their music.

“‘Place Memory’ is probably the song that best encapsulates the overall sound of Place Memory, the album,” Lipman says. “It’s a driving power-pop song with a big sing-along chorus. It’s got big guitars, big vocal harmonies, and a big group-sing at the end. If someone asked what we sound like and I could only show them one song, it would be this one.”
