Jesus the Dinosaur – “For me personally, punk music let me feel comfortable being bad at playing music, which was really critical for me starting out as a kid.” – Interview

Moosic Entertainment: Do you have a story behind your artist name?

Tommy Ng: My friend and I were at a show together when we were 17 just joking around with something stupid we could say that would make stuffy atheists and Christians alike both hate us. And then I just started using it as an artist name for songwriting that didn’t fit into any of the bands I was in.

Bradley Robertson: Tommy and I had an encounter with someone who began to confront us a few times to explain how much of a blasphemous sin our band name was and how we needed to repent. I think we relish the fact that it can be a deterrent to people who lack an open mind. Our music doesn’t have to appeal to everyone!

Tell us a bit about your music journey. How has it shaped you?

Ng: For me personally, punk music let me feel comfortable being bad at playing music, which was really critical for me starting out as a kid. I would have never kept playing music if I didn’t have punks telling me that what you sound like isn’t the point. I still believe that for myself, and it keeps me true to my artistry.

How would you describe your sound to someone unfamiliar with it?

Ng: Indie rock with folk harmonies. I feel like we kinda have a Ratboys thing going on currently.

What drew you to the genre /instruments you’re playing right now?

Ng: I’ve always written songs on guitar. Before this current iteration of the band, during the most recent solo period, I was drawn to make music like Iron and Wine’s archive tape music – but making it groovy like Motown. Some of that has carried over into the band, but it’s definitely less focused on genre and more focused on being friends and doing anything we feel like.

What inspires you to write music?

Ng: My childhood, complex relationships… I also use music to explore things about myself I don’t quite understand yet.

Would you tell us about your current project, album/EP, or song you’re promoting?

Ng: We are releasing our first single “Sweet Nothing” off our upcoming album, Nothing To The Branches.” It’s our first album as a band, and the single is about being maxed out on your social meter at a social gathering.

What do you want listeners to take away from listening to your music?

Ng: I hope they find something relatable, have a new thought, and feel like it’s music for them wherever they are in their life.

Who are your top three artists right now? If that’s not a fair question, what’s your favorite song right now?

Ng: mine would be Andy Shauf, MUNA, and Portrayal of Guilt.

What’s the easiest way for fans to connect with you?

Ng: Insta! We’re @jesusthedinosaur.

Connect with Jesus the Dinosaur:
 Instagram x Bandcamp x YouTube

What’s next for you?

Ng: More shows hopefully, and getting back to writing as a band.

Anything else you’d like to add or let us know about?

Ng: Free Palestine, fuck ICE, destroy all empires.
