In their debut LP, Cape Crush have recorded the closest thing to a guide to life and how to move forward alongside the many ups and downs that come along with it. Built upon a combination of lived experiences and self-reflective exploration, Place Memory is a thoughtful and warm album that will no doubt become an anchor for anyone feeling adrift as life around them moves unceasingly onward.
The Massachusetts-based outfit immediately made waves with their debut EP San Souci in 2023 and have continued to expand and explore new depths to their sound and songwriting. The band achieves a spellbinding level of dialogue and dreaminess throughout Place Memory that is intimate and inviting. Mixed with the swirling and emotive lyrics are tones of third-wave emo and pop sensibilities. Amongst the prevalent themes of doubt and grief, there is a through-line of hesitant optimism that only comes from living through struggle. Not to be held down or defined by the struggle, Place Memory accepts it and walks alongside it with a hesitant, learned optimism.
In just 10 tracks, Place Memory encompasses entire emotional journeys and personal growth inspired by both real life and imagined circumstances. Opening with “I Don’t Care About Anything” and bookending with “I Care Too Much About Everything” demonstrates the album’s bite-sized but expansive storytelling. While songs like “Calm & Delivered”, “Come Shed Your Light On Me”, and “Train In Motion” are based on the realities of day-to-day emotional regulation, parenthood, and breakups, songs like “Place Memory” and “Dotted Line” are inspired by conversations that never took place.
Self-described as power-emo, Cape Crush approach the categorically raw emotional power of emo with the maturity and layered ingenuity of modern indie. Track by track, the band shares its vulnerabilities and creates a genuine connection with the listener that culminates in a much needed cathartic experience. In their first full-length debut, Cape Crush have found their unique balance of intimately engaging lyrics and song structure with up-tempo and playful sound.
Place Memory is undoubtedly a core album and its arrival could not be more timely. Without pushing, Cape Crush have crafted a melodic and tender journey across treacherous emotional landscapes towards the bright side.
