A Lesson In Sonic Surrealism: Crast surprise release new EP ‘Shapes & Stripes’

Equal parts explosive and enigmatic, Crast appears when you least expect them and drops staggeringly solid music, then acts like it was no big deal. This is the case of their latest surprise EP Shapes & Stripes that carries weighty fuzz, raspy melodies, and cannot be accurately defined by any hyphenated amalgamation of genres. Marking their first release since their stunning sophomore album Headspace in 2024, Shapes & Stripes continues the shadowy mythos of a band that strikes when they choose to, and without concern if people are ready for it.

Released May 6 without any prior announcement, Shapes & Stripes is a test of sonic surrealism that shifts its tone and time changes creating something different that what it started as. Not to be pigeon-holed by any particular genre, Crast dynamically fuse elements from an eclectic arsenal of criteria including prog metal, math rock, alternative, and midwest emo. The band weaves whatever elements serve them best and deliver something new via reinterpreted classic rock structure to create their unique sound. From track to track, it is never safe to assume what you’re going to get musically but, at its core, what you’re getting is something genuine. The 3 new tracks that make up Shapes & Stripes encapsulate the Crast experience in that they vary in their elements but are cohesive in their authenticity.

The titular track “Shapes & Stripes” opens the EP with a proggy and provocative tone driven by pounding drums and raspy, shouted vocals. The guitars swirl and create an atmosphere of mounting turmoil that simmers and explodes. “On Fire” veers into skate punk territory, paired with Beach Boy vocal layers that make for a one-of-a-kind mix. The shout-and-response and screeching guitar lead to a chaotic bridge that leaves the song in unexpected territory. Rounding out the tracklist is “Wide-Eyed”, a math rock-inspired song blended with the raw and longing energy of midwest emo. Comprised of just 3 tracks, Shapes & Stripes contains a bounty of material that will easily muscle its way into heavy rotation.

Unfazed by a short runtime, Shapes & Stripes prove Crast’s effortless ability to incorporate their signature power and musical acumen into any project size. With a wealth of influence and inspiration, Crast are one of the most exciting bands to follow who have never released a bland song.
