Sam Ness Reflects on a Decade of Life on the Road with Of Heart and Home

Folk and Americana artist Sam Ness turns a decade of travel, relationships, uncertainty, and self-discovery into Of Heart and Home, a deeply personal album filled with heartfelt songwriting and raw emotion.

Ness’s passionate vocals and impressive guitar playing take center stage throughout the record. While some tracks feature strings for added emotional depth, much of the album relies on the intimacy of Ness’s voice and guitar.

The album traces a journey that began when Ness was 18, when a stranger gave him a one-way ticket anywhere in the world. After spinning a globe, Ness landed in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he couch surfed, slept in the woods, and eventually became a street performer. That experience led to a decade of life on the road and around 220 shows a year across the Midwest.

“Slotty Road” captures the feeling of leaving home and small-town life behind to pursue something greater, while “Walmart Parking Twilight” and “Seasons” explore the highs and lows of life as a traveling musician, including loneliness, relationships, friendships, and mental health.

Of Heart and Home also follows Ness’s search for connection and a place to belong. After finding a partner and dreaming of building a home together, their paths eventually separated. Now settled in Fennimore, Wisconsin, Ness looks back on the past decade with gratitude.

Of Heart and Home is an intimate Folk and Americana album rooted in lived experience, with Ness’s voice and guitar carrying the story of a decade spent searching for freedom, connection, and ultimately, home.
