Corinne Caza – Interview

Corinne Caza took the time away from her busy release schedule for her up coming track “TILTED” to let us know a bit about her and we’re thankful for it!

Bio: Corinne Caza is a singer-songwriter from Canada. She finds herself in beautiful ballads, indie and folky pop, and classics from different genres. Corinne’s multicultural heritage strongly influences her music and the way she writes, as she’s known for her performances in many languages, including French, English, Italian, and Spanish. Corinne Caza’s tropical debut single, “So I Dance,” tells the ups and downs of life and how to deal with them. The best medicine against “Sticky Shadows”? Dance.

On August 28th, 2020, Corinne’s second single was released, “When We Get Younger.” The vulnerability in Corinne’s voice, the soft guitar, and the exciting piano portrays the contrasting experience of growing up, growing old, and even growing younger. The song molds itself to the listeners’ memories, and the story becomes yours to tell.

On September 26th, 2020, Corinne released her single, “Timeless.” Through imagination and reminiscing, “Timeless” tells the story of little moments that make you feel eternal; when you forget about the what if’s, the to-do lists, the worries, and the ticking of the clock. It is the bittersweet meeting between child-like innocence and the reality of the adult in one timeless moment that slows down time and stays with you well after it’s passed. Strategically placed breaks in the music set the pace of the song and sucks the listener in the story through vocal production and storytelling.

First off, Tell us about your musical past. Would you tell us about your early years?

For my whole life, all I wanted to do was sing. I could sing before I could talk. A few days ago, I found an old family video where I’m on top of a staircase at the family house, as a very little girl, singing made up words and all kinds of gibberish to an imaginary crowd on an imaginary stage, ha ha! I was always a very dreamy kid, always imagining scenarios, dancing to myself in public places without realizing people around could see me, writing stories, and reenacting them by myself. The first song I remember writing was about Santa Claus, and I was about seven years old. It was also around that time that I realized that there were people who sang for a living. From then on, I knew that was what I wanted to do. And you know, we’ve all heard this, the ever-popular response to that choice of career “Oh, you know it’s going to be very hard. It’s one in a million chances you succeed.” My response has always been, “If it happened to someone else, then who’s to say it won’t happen to me? If they’ve done it, then it can be done, and I’m going to do it.”

How would you describe your sound?

I am from Montreal, Canada. I come from a cosmopolitan city, and I have a multicultural heritage. My sound is heavily influenced by that fact, may it be in the melodies I write, the arrangements I choose, or the languages I express myself in. I gravitate toward the indie-pop/folk genre. I love colorful songs with honest lyrics, metaphors, acoustic instruments, and modern beats. Time, nostalgia, introspection, dreams are some of the themes that inspire me.

Which artists have the biggest influence on your sound?

That is a hard one. I would have to say that artists that I listened to when I was growing up have certainly inspired me. I love Taylor Swift’s and Ed Sheeran’s songwriting, and I’m a big fan of FINNEAS’ production and lyrics as well. But artists like Salvatore Adamo, Dalida, Joe Dassin, etc. have also heavily influenced the melodies and the sensitivity in my music.

What’s the last song you listened to?

My own song, an unreleased one ha ha! I’m working on finalizing the release, so I had to listen to it a lot these last few days. It’s actually coming out on November 27th, so be sure to follow me on social and streaming platforms, so you don’t miss it!

But the last song that I didn’t write that I listened to? “Don’t Let Me Down” by Jack Johnson and Milky Chance. Collab of the Gods if you ask me.

What’s your source for hearing new music?

Seeing what artists who inspire me listen to is always a good idea to me. I also love getting involved in the indie artist community because you find undiscovered gems in there. There is so much talent out there, and it’s well hidden in the algorithm and behind all the big names. So yeah, going out and looking for it is a great way to find new indie artists. Plus, you meet great people doing it!

Who is your dream producer?

Right now, I love FINNEAS. I love the amplitude of his mixes and the variety of them. They take you on a journey.

If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?

Haha, well, the list is long. Especially since I love so many artists from so many genres, I’ll try to keep it brief. So as for my own music, I would have to say FINNEAS. I would love to produce with him on one of my tracks. Also, I can’t resist mentioning that singing with Salvatore Adamo would make the little girl in me very happy.

What led you to music, and what motivates you to keep making it?

It’s weird; it just felt natural to go to music. As I said, it felt like it was always part of me. As if I was caught in its current for my whole life. What motivates me to keep making it is that I love it so much. I make music because it feels like living my life in music equals living my life in magic. Also, seeing people relate to my songs is such a blessing. It doesn’t feel like I’ve reached a goal; it feels like we made a personal connection. People telling me my songs make them feel makes all the struggle worthwhile. I am such a dreamer, especially through art, so to be able to provide that feeling to other people in any way makes me very happy.

Tell us about the songwriting process. How does it all come together?

Well, it changes all the time. It can be from a beat that I make up, a need for catharsis, or just from daydreaming. I think the key element to any songwriting is an open and free mind. Also, I write all the time, and I get lost in the clouds a lot. A lot of things are happening inside, and I write them down in a notebook. For example, my song “When We Get Younger” was written completely in April. The spark of inspiration for it, though, came from the first lyrics of the song “You colored my eyes blue because I liked the sea,” which I had written in January. From there, the song just kind of flowed.

How do you connect with your audience? What is the easiest way for them to connect with you?

Well, real-life encounters and live shows are the sweetest, but not always possible, especially in 2020. So, I love love love meeting people on social media. You have no idea how many friends I’ve met through Instragram. We become each other’s fans, ha ha! It’s so fun. Find me on social media and streaming platforms under Corinne Caza, @corinnecaza. “Timeless” is your most listened to song on Spotify. You want to tell us what that song means to you, and would you share your favorite lyric from the song?

Ohhhh, my favorite lyric is a hard one. I love a lot of them because each word means something specific to me. If I had to choose one, though, it would be “You’re one of a kind I didn’t think there was. Oh, what a beautiful way to be wrong.” I wrote this song in May 2020, so deep into quarantine. I must say, it truly made me escape through imagination and reminiscing. It’s about those moments where you forget about everything around you, and you become Timeless. As you grow up, they may become a little rarer. It’s about finding that again, that innocence, where you forget about the ticking of the clock, the to-do lists, the what-ifs, the hurting, and all those things you can’t control, and just for that instant, all that matters is right now.

“When We Get Younger” has the most plays on Spotify at the moment. Most people get older with age. What does it mean when people get younger? What made you write this song?

Well, to me, “When We Get Younger” and “Timeless” are siblings. This song is all about letting the child in you be, finding your innocence again. It’s a song about forgiveness, nostalgia, and hope. When is the last time you laughed until your stomach hurt? You spent a day without thinking about work? We have to learn to play again. As you grow older, you know more, you learn more, and you’ve done more. Plus, you get caught up in everyday things: Work, ambition, responsibilities, whatever it is. But, there is something blissful about wonder; there are possibilities in wonder. It is worth finding your innocence again because life is too short to lose touch with all of this. It’s all yours if only you believe, you know?

There’s a music video for “When We Get Younger.” What was the inspiration behind it? How were the backdrops done, and how was it filmed?

This video was all about the emotions. “When We Get Younger” is very colorful and immersive. The video aimed to tell a story and leave it all to the interpretation of the viewer, since “When We Get Younger’s” story is, first and foremost, yours to tell. I directed and edited the music video myself. It involved pre and post-production, which I did myself as well. As for how the backdrops were done, I’ll let the mystery remain for that one. Tell you what, go watch it and give me your best guesses as to how I did it!

“So I Dance” is one of your older tunes. The meaning of this song sounds pretty obvious, but would you tell us what the song means to you, and what are “Sticky shadows?” Also, what languages were in the song, and what’s the English translation?

So, this song is the first song I ever released, so it holds a special place in my heart. It’s kind of the parachute I jumped out of the plane with, and I love it to this day. It’s such a fun song, so relatable, and I made so many memories with it. It’s about how to forget all those worries and the shadows they cast on you that you can’t seem to get rid of: You dance! I sing in Spanish on the bridge. It says, “To forget my worries, a little bit of dancing is the best solution.”

“So I dance” has a music video. How were the lyrics placed on the video?

Well, I did the lyric video myself. Every little movement of the text has been added, made, and exported separately, so it was a long process. It was all worth it, though, and I love how it came out!

What’s next for you?

Well, well, well! Very exciting things. I have lots of collaborations coming; I’m in the studio working on more music and preparing cool shows for you guys for when we can see each other again.

Most importantly, I have a new single coming out on November 27th, 2020. It’s called “TILTED.” It will be available on all platforms. Make sure to follow me there, and on social media, so you don’t miss it. It’s an important one.

Tell us about your new song? What inspired it?

It takes in everything that has happened for, at least, the last four years. Things around the world have been difficult. So, it’s about dealing with that. It’s about hope and resilience, to recharge your batteries if you’re too weary to continue.

I don’t know. I needed to find a way to help. I hope this song helps to make the weight of the problems in the world a little bit lighter on your shoulders when it all becomes unbearable. The end of a difficult year for the globe is approaching. And with the new year, hope for a solution slowly surfaces. With every problem we encountered, we proved that in unity, there is strength. We saw people holding each other through songs when they couldn’t do it in person. We saw people going out and buying groceries for the ones for whom doing it themselves meant risking their lives, we saw people united, marching in the streets when justice wasn’t being served, and so much more. Even if there is still unspeakable heartbreak roaming the streets of our cities, our people still stand tall. We might be a little tilted, but we remain strong.

Anything else you’d like to add or let us know about?

Thank you. Thank you for listening, thank you for caring, and thank you for reading this article. I realized something recently: I want to thank all the people who listened to my favorite artists when nobody else did. You are the people who brought me their music. You are the people who gave them what they needed so that their music would get to me. And you don’t know how much their music means to me. Each and every one of us helps people find new music just by listening to it. And we all know how sweet and healing music is.

So, to all the people who are listening to my songs, and joining me on my journey: Thank you. Thank you for bringing my music to more people. Thank you for connecting with me. You are the ones who make dreams come true; you are so important. We will do great things together.

Make sure you follow me on social media and streaming platforms, so you don’t miss my new single, “TILTED.” I hope my music makes you dream. I hope you make it yours.
