Seven Times Driven – “My mom told me, years ago, that she knew I’d do something with music.” – Interview

This is not the end of your story, because Seven Times Driven just got started with their awesome new single “Non-Fiction!”

First off, What’s up with your name? Is there a story behind it?

At the very beginning of SDWS I wanted to share my influences, bands that should have more recognition, and to share the ‘stages’ of my music journey but then it ended up turning in to me ‘diving’ into the stages of other musicians journey instead.

Tell us about your musical past, would you tell us about your early years?

I mainly grew up listening to oldies and Christian music. No, I never got in to Stryper, lol! I dug a lot of the Christian thrash and punk scene, thanks to my older brother. Then as years went by, I floored by the entire grunge scene. Nirvana absolutely blew me away. So like most kids, I wanted to look like and  play guitar like Mr. Cobain. I have embarrassing pics to prove it. Anyway, that’s where playing music began for me.

How would you describe your sound?

My own solo material is very late 90’s emo (not MCR ‘emo’)  but with a bit of a thick prog rock touch. My actual band, The Spacing Effect leans more towards the late 90’s-00’s grunge/alt rock sound. And my side punk project Seven Times Driven has a 90’s punk feel with hints of modern punk.

Which artists have the biggest influence on your sound?

First and foremost Sunny Day Real Estate. Then I’d say bands like Hum, Mineral, Texas Is the Reason, Far, Quicksand, The Promise Ring, Yellowcard, One Bad Pig, Helmet, etc.

What’s the last song you listened to?

Drive On To Me by Elliott

What’s your source for hearing new music?

Mainly listening to Spotify radio stations or word of mouth from friends and other musicians.

Who is your dream producer?

Don’t really have one but I love my bands producer Max Wasa. She’s awesome.

If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?

Dare I say, Jeremy Enigk (lead singer of Sunny Day Real Estate)? I’d be ecstatic but ridiculously nervous.

What led you to music, and what motivates you to keep making it?

My mom told me, years ago, that she knew I’d do something with music. When I was a wee lad, every time my mom took my brothers and I to see a movie, I was always humming the music from the movie as we were coming out of the theater. This was constant and with everything, even tv jingles and tv show theme songs.

Music speaks for me when I can’t. It’s in my blood. When I can’t use words to express how I feel, grabbing my guitar helps me there. I have a lot to say. When the day comes where I finally have nothing else to say, I might just put the guitar down.

Tell us about the songwriting process. How does it all come together?

I used to write a crap ton of poetry back in the day and then tried to work music around it. As I’ve gotten older and am not as overly dramatic, lol, I usually just start playing my guitar to whatever mood I’m in and then build lyrics from there if I’m really feeling it. Then I usually start up my computer and record the main idea and just start adding from there.

How do you connect with your audience?

Mainly online, through most socials.

What is the easiest way for them to connect with you?

Instagram, Twitter, FB or even email. I’m super easy to get a hold of and I always respond, usually sooner than later.

What’s next for you?

Time permitting, I’m hoping to start scheduling bands again for the show. In the meantime I’m recording new material for TSE, got two separate projects in the works, one is my punk project called Seven Times Driven and the other is my solo emo stuff, which is called Every Monster I Love. I’m trying to practice some of my solo stuff to finally start playing live.

Anything else you’d like to add or let us know about?

Always support independent bands and smaller bands. It means the world to them.
