St. Humain cleared their busy schedule to chat with us about their music. Let’s see what they have to say!
First off, What’s up with your name? Is there a story behind it?
Hi! Haha, that’s a good question. Yeah, when it came time for me to put out some of my own music… I wanted something that could really capture both sides of life, you know, the good and the bad. That’s what my songs try to capture anyway — and so I picked being “saint” and “human”, and decided to be different so went with the French word for “human” which is “humain”… And combined we get St. Humain.
Tell us about your musical past, would you tell us about your early years?
So I started out by playing guitar in my teens actually – I was trying to be in the Red Hot Chili Peppers and then tried to be John Mayer, which led me into singing and songwriting. Actually before that I remember being a kid running around the house with a little tape recorder just recording random sounds and songs from the radio speakers, haha. Anyway, after all that I taught myself how to prodice, and eventually made my own songs that you hear today.
How would you describe your sound?
I listen to such a wide variety of music so I would say my music is a reflection of that — I try to be genre-agnostic in that way, but right now I think my music’s in between pop, electronic and R&B.
Which artists have the biggest influence on your sound?
Right now it’s Ariana Grande and SZA for vocals, and for production it’s pretty much alternative R&B, and anything that’s currently pop. Charlie Puth, Post Malone, all that kinda stuff.
What’s the last song you listened to?
California by the 88rising crew. The acoustic version actually – it’s got a special place in my heart.
What’s your source for hearing new music?
Honestly Spotify is really great at this. What’s even better though is friends who send me cool stuff – my fellow artist friend Sätilä has great recommendations as well as my other friend Jel has the best playlists for every mood I swear.
Who is your dream producer?
Am I allowed three? Max Martin for the songcrafting side of things, Kenny Beats for the mad energy, and… Maybe Carter Lang just because he’s all over SZA’s records.
If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?
Ariana Grande but I would melt so… Yes her.
What led you to music, and what motivates you to keep making it?
At the very start I think I just liked how it made me feel, you know? When I was a kid it was just fun and addictive. It’s still the same now, but when it comes to both listening and making it I think these days I’m about creating a universe with sound. Something that people can listen and escape to. Kinda like a sonic movie.
Tell us about the songwriting process. How does it all come together?
I usually start with a feeling, or actually, a single line. If I don’t have either of those the song doesn’t really connect with me because I feel like that’s basically the song’s DNA. If I don’t have that, everything is such hard work. But if I have that central piece, everything flows so easily. The words and melodies usually come kinda together because for me the mood of the lyrics need to match the feeling of the music.
How do you connect with your audience? What is the easiest way for them to connect with you?
Social media! As much as it annoys me sometimes… Like why am I seeing another food shot or like why are people oversharing? It’s funny sometimes. But I love it because literally people are so hilarious and creative. @sthumain everywhere J

What’s next for you?
I’m dropping my second EP, which is called METADRAMATIC in February 2023! My first EP EMOTIONAL SAUNA was with Capitol Music Group over in LA, but things finished up with them so I’m back independent and now partnering with this group Groover Obsessions who are based in Paris… Looking forward to releasing METADRAMATIC with them and looking forward to seeing how things go! Hopefully people like it.
Anything else you’d like to add or let us know about?
Oh yes I should mention! Since resurrecting myself in 2021 after the first EP… I started marking merch and apparel under my brand “Emotional Sauna” that I named after my first EP. So each release since 2021 has come with its own limited edition apparel — and more to come with METADRAMATIC! Check it all out at emotionalsauna.com.
