Chin Up, Kid chatted with us about their music and how they make it. We love hearing about how it’s done. Let’s see what they have to say!
First off, What’s up with your name? Is there a story behind it?
Quintin: Most people think it was named after Forever the Sickest Kids song, but our band pre dates the song by a few months. To be honest, I don’t remember the original meaning, but I think we have adopted more of an ironic meaning behind it.. for example, Chin Up, Kid.. the worlds ending.
Tell us about your musical past, would you tell us about your early years?
Jon: We’ve all been playing music forever. Josh has been in some metal and hip hop acts that I used to play shows with back in the day, and Quintin and I have been in all of the same bands together for the past like 8 years now. We’ve always been super business minded though, and that’s always been obvious in our executions.
How would you describe your sound?
Jon: Lots of samples, eerie melodies, MASSIVE choruses, sometimes heavy, and sometimes poppy.
Which artists have the biggest influence on your sound?
Jon: I mean, that’s so hard because I really don’t think what we listen to bleed over.
What’s the last song you listened to?
Jon: I think one of ours that’s not out yet
What’s your source for hearing new music?
Jon: I’ll usually know about a release that I’ll be interested in ahead of time, but you know, social media, then look it up on Spotify or Apple or whatever.
Who is your dream producer?
Jon: I’d love to work with John Feldmann, Travis Barker, or Joey Sturgis.
Quintin: Always wanted to work with Feldman growing up, but recently I’d love to work with Travis Barker and/or Tyler Smyth
If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?
Jon: Mark Hoppus, MGK, and Oli Sykes are probably my top 3.
What led you to music, and what motivates you to keep making it?
Jon: I just write what I want to listen to, really. If I write something, I look at it from the perspective of if another band put this track out, would I be like “Fuck, I wish I wrote that.”?
Tell us about the songwriting process. How does it all come together?
Jon: So I’ll open the session up, create a synth based melody I like, then write the chorus, then verses, then bridge around it. I’ll have a full instrumental that’s like 75% complete done after that point. Then Josh will write and track his vocals, Quintin will rewrite his drums, and then some slight restructuring. Bam next thing we’ve got a fully finished song!
How do you connect with your audience?
Quintin: As long as it’s been, I think we’ve always connected the most with them while we were touring. We would leave most shows later than we should have because we would spend hours in the parking lot or bar talking to anyone that wanted to have a conversation. We’ve made so many amazing, long term friends on the road.
What is the easiest way for them to connect with you?
Quintin: Until we start touring again, (hopefully) we plan to hit social media hard. We are also launching a Patreon account soon that will give them an inside look at our process, exclusive content, archived tour footage & even give them the opportunity to vote on merch designs, future covers & more!
Besides that, we encourage anyone that wants to, to message any of the band accounts or our personals! We’re always down to chat!

Jon: LP3!
Anything else you’d like to add or let us know about?
Quintin: Keep an eye out for a lot more content coming out all year! Like Jon said, we are currently working on LP3, a lot of dope covers, putting together old tour footage and maybe even throwing around the idea of an animated series
. Follow us on all of our socials @chinupkidin , on twitter @chinupkid_in , and @chinupkid on Patreon! Lots of dope content coming soon!
