Debt Cemetary took the time out to tell us about themselves and their music. Let’s see what they have to say!
First off, What’s up with your name? Is there a story behind it?
What’s up with the name Debt Cemetary? Welp. It’s a pretty good name haha. I (Davey) have had a rich history of awful band names and as the band came into fruition, I was dead set on another name that my peers all told me was terrible. I went to a show one night and my buddy was wearing a Pet Semetary shirt on stage and all I could think to myself was, ‘imagine I could find a wicked take on Pet Semetary?’. And there you have it. Debt Cemetary.
Tell us about your musical past, would you tell us about your early years?
The four of us have had so many past acts, there’s not an article big enough to fit them all in. Instead here’s a list of other bands that we play in!: Your Pal Bill, Fast Eddie, Wasting Time, Wordplay, Gnarly Horse, Bad Egg, Reminder, Winning Streak.
How would you describe your sound?
2.5oz Skatepunk, 1oz Pop Punk, a dash of Melodic Hardcore. Stir well, drink cold. Enjoy.
Which artists have the biggest influence on your sound?
Belvedere, A Wilhelm Scream, Anchors, Bigwig, Strung Out, Living With Lions… and pretty much every other rad punk band.
What’s the last song you listened to?
Davey: No Matter – It’s Boring

Bill: Wasting Time – When I’m Gone
Nick: Wordplay – Neighbours
What’s your source for hearing new music?
I think we’re all Spotify users. No shame there. Having almost every band’s album at your fingertips is fucking amazing.
Who is your dream producer?
It’s hard to say. Right now, working with Matt Gauthier (Motion Sickness/Arc Studios) has been nothing shy of amazing and having someone like him work with us the way he does, is a dream come true.
If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?
Since we all play in other bands, we’re already collaborating with so many people all the time – it’s unreal! If I were to speak for everyone I’d say,

What led you to music, and what motivates you to keep making it?
That’s a loaded question and I can’t answer for everyone. I will say this – going to a few local shows, when I was a kid, and seeing the community of all of these people singing along and having the best time of their lives – that’s what drew me to playing and has kept me there ever since.
Tell us about the songwriting process. How does it all come together?
While we grow as a band, we’re still figuring out how the process of how it comes together. Regardless, everyone has full trust in each other and as long as we’ve got an idea to start with, we’ll build a song together.
How do you connect with your audience? What is the easiest way for them to connect with you?
We’re still new and therefore still learning how to connect with our audience. The hope is, the more music we put out, the more people will take notice. Anyone can connect with us over our socials or even just come say hey at a show. We’re really friendly people!
What’s next for you?
We’ve got a ton of shows lined up, leading into the summer. May 16-21 we’ll be hitting the road with Wolfrik – an amazing, shreddy Melodic Hardcore band from Alberta (Thousand Islands Records/Lockjaw Records). This tour will take us through Southern Ontario and we’ll end up at Pouzza Fest (Montreal) and Gatineau, QC.
Following the tour, we’re headed right into the studio to start an album! Major stokage!

We’re incredibly lucky to be a part of the Southern Ontario music scene. There’s so much great music coming from all areas, and everyone is so supportive of one another.
