LT – “I’ve always been drawn to the arts and creative types. It’s something that has always been a part of me.” – Interview

LT spent a little time talking to us about her music and how she makes it. We appreciate it! Let’s see what she has to say!

First off, Tell us about your name? Is there a story behind it?

My artist name LT, are the initals to my full name Leanne Tennant. Over the years in my day to day life, people started calling me LT and it kind of just stuck. It made sense to go by the name that most people referred to me as, so a little over a year ago I took the leap and changed to LT.

Tell us about your musical past, what did your early years in music look like?

My first instrument in school was the flute. I never really warmed to the flute, so there began my quest to find an instrument in which I resonated with and eventually landed on the guitar. I hated the sound of my voice so I only ever wanted to play guitar, but in the process of learning the instrument I naturally gravitated toward writing music and had to get over the hurdle of my dislike of singing so I could show people my songs. I would make everyone in the room turn around and not look at me when it came time to let one out. Hahah.

How would you describe your sound?

My music has taken a new direction over the past few years and now sits quite firmly in the pop, indie-pop landscape. It’s fun, but with serious undertones and with a bit of grit.

Which artists have the biggest influence on your sound?

I love anything and everything, and it’s hard to say that anyone in particular influences my sound. At the moment I’m really loving Devon Cole and Lilly Meola, and am obsessed with UK artist REN.

What’s the last song you listened to?

REN remix ‘Gutter’ by Venbee

If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?

REN, and Devon Cole

What led you to music, and what motivates you to keep making it?

I’ve always been drawn to the arts and creative types. It’s something that has always been a part of me. I often flirt with the idea of going in a completely different direction and going to study law or something like that, but then I realise that I can’t ever really leave music even if I wanted to. I’m a little lost without it. No matter what happens in life, music is like an old familiar friend who is always there and understands me more than anyone does.

Tell us about the songwriting process. How does it all come together?

I tend to start making nonsense with a bit of a vocal melody over some guitar chords and then slowly start to fit words around the sounds. Lyrics more than often come last for me unless I’m working with other writers.

How do you connect with your audience?

What is the easiest way for them to connect with you? I love having a chat with my audience and a bit of a laugh. I was raised on a lot of folk music so naturally gravitate toward having a bit of a banter with my audience, whether that be in a live sense or on social media. I’m always open for chats on the DM’s so love to get little messages from time to time.

What’s next for you?

After some shows to celebrate the release of ACT YOUR AGE, I’m hoping to continue writing toward my next album and do another big run of shows. That’s the plan!
