SORAIA spent a little time answering our questions about their music and how they make it. Let’s see what they have to say!
First off, What’s up with your name? Is there a story behind it?
I don’t think Travis is really that uncommon of a name. My dad was an Air-force mechanic and suggested the name to my mom after being stationed at the Travis air-force base.
Tell us about your musical past, would you tell us about your early years?
The first show I ever performed at as a teenager was in an ice skating rink. The acoustics were terrible.
How would you describe your sound?
With wildly gesticulated hand motions
Which artists have the biggest influence on your sound?
That’s difficult to say since everyone that plays in the band has pretty varied musical tastes and backgrounds etc. From a song writing perspective, I know that Zou has tastes that tend to skew a bit more popular and soulful, and she also has a strong interest in poetry. My tastes tend to be a little more obscure, strange and maybe sometimes a little challenging. But I think we balance each other out in our song writing and that’s what makes it work.
What’s the last song you listened to?
“The Lazy River” by Grave Flowers Bongo Band
What’s your source for hearing new music?
I love discovering new music, so I’ve always got my ears on the lookout. Friends recommendations, Spotify, interesting finds at record stores etc.
Who is your dream producer?
Hmm, personally I’d say maybe John Dwyer.
I’m going to guess Zou would say Jack White. So let’s compromise and say Phil Spector. Hopefully he’d leave his guns at home.
If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?
Well not Phil Spector again, that guy was crazy
What led you to music, and what motivates you to keep making it?
Who knows. I was always around music and art from the time I was small. It just never ceases to fascinate and frustrate me.
Tell us about the songwriting process. How does it all come together?
Often times I’ll come up with a riff, or a musical idea or something like that, and I’ll explore it a little until I’m ready to share it with Zou Zou. She does her thing and then we sit down together and collaborate until it’s something we feel good about and then we bring it to the rest of the band and that’s when the real mayhem begins.
How do you connect with your audience? What is the easiest way for them to connect with you?
Astral Projection. It’s not coincidence that they all had that strange dream on the same night.

What’s next for you?
Well, I’ve been writing this out while I cook dinner, so I guess dinner. Also we have tours and stuff coming up, like the west coast in July and some dates in Sweden late September/Early October. And more new songs scheduled to come out over the summer.
Anything else you’d like to add or let us know about?
We don’t actually see colors, we see light wavelengths and our mind creates the idea of colors. And whatever color an object appears to be, is because it didn’t absorb that wavelength. So oranges aren’t actually orange, they just didn’t absorb that light frequency.
