Do you have a story behind your artist name?
Joel Christian – My artist name was kind of given to me when I was a wardrobe stylist in Los Angeles. No one could ever pronounce my last name so I just went with my first and middle name…Joel Christian. It kind of just became the name that I loved seeing everywhere on call sheets and events. Everyone would just be like “It’s Joel Christian!”
Tells us a bit about your music journey. How has it shaped you?
I have been making music since I was in highschool. It’s definitely a form of escapism for me and allows me to create my own world. I love writing songs, producing music, and singing to them. I performed in my early 20’s and now I just love making music for fun. I want my music to have its own identity. The journey I’ve been on as an artist is still happening. I feel like my journey never ends…I’m always recreating and being inspired.
How would you describe your sound to someone unfamiliar with it?
I make dark pop electronic music. I don’t really care to be mainstream or have a sound like everyone else. I want it to be my own identity. It’s a lot of electronic instruments, vocal fx, chaotic bridges, unexpected drops and build ups, but that’s what I enjoy. My music is a full representation of what is going on in my brain during the writing process. I am so happy I get to write all of my own songs and control the narrative of what it sounds like.
What drew you to the genre /instruments you’re playing right now?
I am obsessed with 80’s synths, darkwave ambience, and just electronic sounds. I wanted to incorporate all of that into this new album. It’s like an electronic dance album with obviously my dark twist to it 🙂
What inspires you to write music?
I get a lot of my inspiration from horror films, fantasy novels, and tv series. I love mixing a dark aesthetic with something fantasy based and fun. I write all of my songs and a lot of my songs are based on personal experiences or even experiences I see others going through. I just love the creative process. I could write songs everyday…and I kind of do to an extent. I have endless lyrics, melodies, and hooks recorded into my voice memos and notes. It’s endless for me to be inspired.
Would you tell us about your current project, album/EP, or song you’re
promoting?
My new album, It Only Comes At Night is truly unique. It’s probably my best work as an artist. I feel like it’s the album that took me so long to get here and be comfortable with my identity. It features 6 original songs that I wrote and co-produced. Before I wrote this album, I looked back at all the music I’ve made and the identity of my art I have created and I wanted all of that compiled into this album. I don’t really care to be famous, or mainstream. I’d rather be myself and continue to drive along that path. My dark pop persona is like a duality of who I am as a real person and I wanted to stick with that. Like, this is my brand, this is my comfort, this is my genre…I’m going to own it now. It Only Comes At Night features everything that made Joel Christian, Joel Christian if that makes sense. It takes you on a personal journey of self worth, re-discovery of your creativity, owning your complex identity while dancing to all of it 🙂
What do you want listeners to take away from listening to your music?
I want to create art and music that inspires others to stay true to who they are and be themselves. I want them to listen to my music and be like wow, he’s different, he’s unique…this is creative and one of a kind. I really don’t care to sound like anyone else…not in a cocky way, but more so in a prideful way. I want to be me.

favorite song right now?
I love my pop girlies to be honest…Kim Petras, Ava Max, and Sabrina Carpenter.

What’s next for you?
I have some ideas of what I want to do next….maybe a deluxe album of It Only Comes At Night…I got some songs in the vault maybe to release…or maybe another album in the beginning of 2025. Who knows…I like to keep the suspense with my fans.
