Matt Bawtree is a singer/songwriter from the south of England. He got his start by busking in Canterbury, Kent, before moving to Manchester to study music, where he continued to busk in and out of the city as a part of the 4-piece indie band ‘South by Zero’ during the 3 years he lived there. Now embarking on his solo project in London, Matt is channeling this exciting change into his music. Characterised by hooky pop melodies, infectious guitar riffs and powerful voice. Matt writes about feelings of displacement and anxiety, taking themes from his family life, relationships and internal dialogue.
A word from Matt on the song: “‘Starting Line’ (a fitting title for my first release) revolves around the theme of setbacks in a relationship whilst creating a parallel with the sport of track running. At the time of writing this song I was running around 60 miles a week and was at a stage where I wasn’t improving at the same rate as my peers, which was very discouraging for me. In a parallel to this, my relationship with my then girlfriend had also begun to get difficult, and I constantly felt a need to ‘heal’ after every conversation or argument that we would have, in a similar way to how I would literally have to heal after every run. Every run was beginning to feel like a chore, in a similar way to how every conversation with my partner was beginning to feel like a chore, hence the line: ‘feel like I’m always healing, always back to the starting line.’ This is the most vulnerable song I have ever written, and I hope at least someone finds comfort in it.”
