Bringing headstone-cold grooves into the goth rock genre, Black Rain have taken crushing, dark malaise and given it the energy to be miserable and move. The Sunderland trio’s debut album is rich with the dissonant tones and atmospheric heaviness that classically define the goth rock genre, but have been given a post-punk shot in the arm that adds a much needed urgency.
Aptly described as “Too Goth to be Punk; To Punk to be Goth”, Black Rain have created a sound that takes the best elements of both and delivered a thematic, moody, and pulsing debut. Just as sunny, warm summer was coming into all its glory, Black Rain countered and dropped this dark and twisted debut that is crushing, bleak, and aggressive enough to keep going.
For a trio, Black Rain produces a huge sound with guitar, bass, and drums putting in overtime to compliment the thematic tone of the lyrics and vocals. The layering of instruments makes for an overwhelming sense of dread that swirls and pushes the listener to move. The band takes on a wide variety of themes that perfectly (and unfortunately) represent the reality of today, including the growing disparities between the parasitic affluent and the working class, homelessness, loneliness, lost loves, and the ever-dimming prospects of a bright future. Despite all that, there is a pulsating and furious undertone that pleads for change.

Without following along with the track listing, you wouldn’t immediately catch on that side 2 of the debut are all live tracks. As if to preemptively shut down online haters who might claim “I bet they don’t sound this good live”, Black Rain brought their own receipts. Since its release, the album has been receiving much deserved accolades internationally and the band is set to bring their music to stages across the globe in 2026.
Black Rain have released a debut built on the bleak state of the world and made it uncompromisingly groovy. Yeah, life sucks…but that doesn’t mean you don’t have stuff to do.
