Nashville is known for producing some of the most legendary country artists and continues to add booms of modern talent into the genre. But under the thick layer of twang and honky-tonk history comes Finger Foods who offer a stunning juxtaposition to the city’s established modus operandi. Affectionately categorized as “bootgaze”, Finger Foods’ debut LP Detroit blends the emotional vulnerability of emo, the undefinable energy of classic indie rock, and hints of alt-country that make for an undeniably affective listening experience.
Quickly establishing themselves as an act not-to-be-missed, Finger Foods two previous EPs garnered much deserved attention and their debut LP was a greatly anticipated event – and it does not disappoint. Released January 17 with production by Adam Miller of Budge and mastered by Grammy Award-Winner Justin Francis, Detroit is a dreamy and profoundly intimate album that carves out its own niche between genres.
With a cadence of resignation and an exhaustive mustering of passion, Detroit begins with the lines “okay, let’s just get it started / it’s okay / I’m already over it, okay” – a declaration that what is to come is a beautifully constructed trauma dump without the cliche ‘woe is me’ tropes. Each of the 10 new tracks play with the idea that the only permanence in life is its fleeting nature. Every genuine moment of connection and the questions that consume our minds will just as quickly be gone and forgotten. The fuzzy guitar work and use of harmonica and occasional banjo add a luster to live in the moment, because that’s all we’ve got. Surprisingly, there is no melodrama amongst the gloominess of Detroit, but a swaggerish nonchalance of someone who cares but doesn’t dwell.

Detroit is an album that relishes in the current moment, and approaches the present with a smirking, but fully open, acceptance of whatever comes next. Asking for less than 30 minutes of your time, Finger Foods have delivered a debut that is authentically human and devastatingly accurate.
