Remy Verreault – “Then I discovered NOFX, and I fell in love with how easy this style of music was to play while still being much more accessible to the audience.” – Interview

Do you have a story behind your artist name?
I’m born with it, my parent choose it 😉

Tells us a bit about your music journey. How has it shaped you?
I listened to metal and death metal during my teenage years. I played guitar and tried to reproduce what I was hearing. I could do it, but it was complicated.

We started a band with some friends, but metal was too difficult for the guys, so my bassist introduced me to punk rock, starting with Lagwagon and Reset. Then I discovered NOFX, and I fell in love with how easy this style of music was to play while still being much more accessible to the audience.

How would you describe your sound to someone unfamiliar with it?
Fast and melodic Punk-Rock mix with Metal and Hardcore

What drew you to the genre /instruments you’re playing right now?
I started playing guitar at the age of 8. My uncle taught me a few chords, and I ran with that. I used to buy tablature books and later learned to figure out songs out by ear.

In 2008, I wanted to play drums in a punk rock band (having a basic background in drumming), so I’ve been developing my skills ever since.

As for bass… I’ve never really played it. I just have fun with it and figure things out when it’s time to record that instrument.

In 2021, a friend made me realize that I could actually hit notes with my voice. I was already doing backing vocals, but I had never taken the lead. Since the beginning of my solo project, I’ve been developing my vocal cords — before that, I was mostly just screaming.

What inspires you to write music?
Hate, Love, Politics, Technologies, War…

Would you tell us about your current project, album/EP, or song you’re promoting?
Two short songs to hold things over while I fine-tune my album, which is set to be released in March 2026.

What do you want listeners to take away from listening to your music?
That I do everything on my own — songwriting, recording, mixing, mastering, artwork… So it’s possible that I repeat myself sometimes.

Who are your top three artists right now? If that’s not a fair question, what’s your favorite song right now?
As always Metallica, Nofx, Lagwagon and special mention to The Corps from Vancouvert.

What’s next for you?
The album is basically ready. I just need to fine-tune everything and decide what I keep and what I throw in the trash. Out of 13 songs, I’m keeping 10. I still have ideas I’m unsure about — whether to include them or save them for the next one.

Once the album is out, I don’t really have a plan. I never do. I always improvise. Since I play in bands with friends, I prioritize those projects, and when things slow down, I jump headfirst back into my solo project.

Anything else you’d like to add or let us know about?
Be real, be kind, and love yourself.

Bio:
Nestled deep within the limits of La Baie (one of Saguenay’s 3 boroughs), lies Quebec’s best kept punk rock secret – Remy Verreault! Well, not that secret. After spending decades fine tuning his craft in such heavy hitters as We Love Danger, Wrong Advice, and most recently, Mark & The Wolves, Verreault decided to take a stab at a solo career. 6 releases later (yes, six!), he caught the attention of High End Denim Records for his 7th and mightiest release entitled “On My Own.” Containing 12 high heaters and an acoustic rendition of a previously released song, this album is a great way to kick off 2023 right!
