GARRETT ANTHONY RICE FINDS A MYTHIC CURRENT WITH “IN THE DARKNESS WITH THE SPIRIT OF THE LAKE (A FAMILY TRAGEDY)”

A quiet pull of surrender to the abyss forms the newest entry on the path to Equinox

The latest single from Garrett Anthony Rice, “In The Darkness With The Spirit Of The Lake (A Family Tragedy),” is a quietly chilling addition to his forthcoming double album Equinox. Set at Blessington Lake in County Wicklow, Ireland the song tells the story of a young boy drowning as he is addressed and taunted by the Púca, the ancient spirit said to dwell beneath the water.
The track moves with the still, unsettling calm of deep water at night. The melody drifts on the surface, while the lyrics trace a serene surrender that slowly tips into something darker. Rice plays with that tension, giving listeners space to settle in before pulling them under, making the song’s gradual descent all the more chilling.

As the voice of the Púca emerges, the imagery becomes more intimate and more unsettling. This is not the voice of the lake, but of the entity beneath it, one inspired by Irish folklore and long associated with the Poulaphouca Reservoir. It speaks to the boy as if this ending has already been decided.
The song’s final movement has an air of inevitability. Finality comes quietly, which is exactly why it stays. Rice allows the structure to thin out until the listener feels the fall as if it were happening inside of them. The song ends as old stories do, with a presence that does not rejoice in the taking of a life but simply persists. It is a quiet pulse, as if the water has not yet finished deciding who it will speak to next. As the next piece in the path toward Equinox, it widens the scope of the project and shows how the themes of longing, danger, and surrender that appeared in the earlier singles now move into more folkloric and elemental territory.

About Garrett Anthony Rice

Hailing from County Dublin, Ireland, and now living in Greystones, County Wicklow, for the last twenty years with his family, Garrett Anthony Rice intends to make a significant impact on the global music scene in 2025.
EQUINOX is the first double album (18 songs) to be released by a debut solo artist as their second record in musical history, so the task of writing and completing this record was pretty daunting and enormous.

Garrett released his debut album under the alias of (i) CONSULT in October 2023, entitled “Reflections Part II, the very best of……” which was streamed in 93 countries and piqued the interest of UK producer Chris Potter (The Rolling StonesPaul McCartneyU2 and The VerveRichard Ashcroft) in late 2023. Out of a possible 30 recorded demos, 18 were selected and recorded throughout 2024, both in the UK and Ireland and already, the well-known and esteemed music professionals who worked on this record and who have heard it are lauding this album as the record of this year.

My Sons” was the first single from the record released on 28 February 2025 which Garrett wrote for Mrs. Peggy Gallagher, mother of OASIS’ Liam and Noel, when they were still estranged. The song ties into the other diverse themes on the album, which industry professionals are already touting as one of the best Irish albums ever made.

This new single, “Property (An Ode To Roger Syd Barrett, a genius, 1946-infinity),” is a tribute to Syd Barrett from Pink Floyd, and it attempts to reverse the tired narrative that he was an artist to be pitied and avoided rather than the influential and brilliant songwriter he was. “EQUINOX” will be available to pre-save closer to the time of release on vinyl and all platforms.
