Melody, urgency, and characteristically catchy hooks lead the latest single from pop-punk mainstays Chief State. “DAMN!” marks the fourth and final single ahead of the band’s much anticipated forthcoming album featuring their new line up.
As the final preview before the release of Keep Your Friends Closer on April 17, “DAMN!” is another exemplary track that proves Chief State are a pop-punk banger machine that cannot be slowed, and certainly not stopped. Without missing a beat following a line-up change in band members, Chief State have been releasing the most well-rounded and exciting music of their tenure as pop-punk pillars.
Released March 25, ‘DAMN!” demonstrates a new level of cohesion for the band which they acknowledge is partially due to their new approach to writing collaboratively.
“‘DAMN!’ was the first song we wrote together with the new lineup. It was also the first time we had ever gotten into a room to write a song from scratch as a unit,” says vocalist Fraser Simpson. “Previously we would write songs individually and then edit parts together from there. The process felt extremely creative — everybody got to contribute and the final song really represents what Chief State is going forward.”

Still packed with the band’s signature blend of catchy hooks, high-energy, and nostalgic tones, “DAMN!” also displays an evolution that says Chief State is here to stay. Even with countless thousands of miles and immeasurable hours performing, its clear that Chief State are still finding the fun in every song. Releasing four singles ahead of Keep Your Friends Closer is a sign that Chief State cannot wait to share what they’ve created with their fans.
Keep Your Friends Closer is due out April 17 via Mutant League Records.
