Do you have a story behind your artist name?
Yes a whole Family story infact. It’s my last name haha.
Tells us a bit about your music journey. How has it shaped you?
Telling you about that would be the story of my life. My dad is a liturgical musician. I grew up sitting on the bench of the pipe organ beside him, pulling the stops and helping my aunty direct the choir. Music has always been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember.
What drew you to the genre /instruments you’re playing right now?
Growing up in the 2000s and being a moody kid. I gravitated towards the post-hardcore, metal, and rock bands of the time. Billy Talent, A7X, Alexisonfire, MCR, 30 seconds to Mars (old stuff only). I guess I wear my influence on my sleeve. I couldn’t escape them. Piano was my first love, not that I play it as much as guitar anymore, but I think that’s what can give my playing and our music a different sound.
What inspires you to write music?
Any intense emotion. That can be from life but it can also be from movies or art that has really impacted me. Takato Yamamoto’s art has inspired me a lot lately. Other music artists of course inspire me but it’s never them who make me stop what I’m doing and sit down to write something new.
Would you tell us about your current project, album/EP, or song you’re promoting?
Fade into Being is the first glimpse into the world we are building. Not just sonically, but aesthetically. We flirt with everything from post-hardcore, to shoegaze, to metalcore, and emo, but Howells isn’t for fans of that music necessarily, it’s more for anyone that wants to get lost in somewhere new they’ve just discovered. That’s why we are building this place. For the right people to get lost in.
What do you want listeners to take away from listening to your music?
I hope they come to know Howells better. Emotionally, sonically, and spiritually. But more than anything I hope the EP makes them feel something. I hope there’s a song that makes them be where their feet are and take them out of their head so they are just sitting presently with the music and with themselves. It can be hard to do in this age. Those moments are precious.
Who are your top three artists right now? If that’s not a fair question, what’s your favorite song right now?
I’ll go with bands on the newer side for this: Static Dress, Bilmuri, Sace6
