The Northern Line embrace the swinging sound of classic UK Beat and add their cool Bostonian swagger on their debut self-titled EP. Released May 8, The Northern Line EP consists of 4 vibrant tracks that capture the essence of a packed beer hall singalong complete with slick storytelling and a red hot rhythm section.
Influenced by the enticingly groovy sounds traced back across the Atlantic, the Boston-based outfit have bolstered their sound with scorching hooks that are designed to keep the dancefloor alive. The Northern Line do not copy and paste, but infuse time-tested UK stylings with a modern indie edge that adds a much needed grit to their sound.
Opening track “Lightning Strikes” is a raucous beerhall jam to get the audience ready to kick off an all night celebration. Against the backdrop of a jubilantly stacked sound (with a special mention to the keys), the chorus “Bang the drum / Here it comes / When the lightning strikes / You know it’s right” is clearly for the people to sing right back. Followed by “Throw A Fist”, the rhythm section locks in and holds down a strong and strut-worthy beat that feels at home in the late 90s madchester movement. The power, precision, and effortless cool converge on the EP’s third track “Let’s Roll On”. Decidedly moodier than the previous 2 tracks, “Let’s Roll On” is built around the sweltering guitar licks that cement the band’s adaptability and flair. The last track “Out In The Drift” showcases the band’s storytelling and ability to create an enticing atmosphere without losing the energy they’ve built to this point – and the solo is an electric cherry on top.
