The Promise to Disappear is an exposed nerve and a spiraling mind that nearly fractures and falls apart if not for FakeYou’s steadfast musicianship. The debut album from the Montreal punk band puts pain on full display and addresses the haunting remnants of what is left behind after profound loss. FakeYou turn the traditional punk ethos of pushing things to their limits on its head as they strive to keep the emotional power of the album from spilling over into untethered territory.
There was nothing anyone could do to prepare for The Promise to Disappear when it was released on April 3, which feels apt when considering the content of the album. What unravels is a raw and powerfully exposed journey through the aftermath of personal devastation. Choosing to focus on the lingering feelings that follow loss instead of the initial shock of it, FakeYou has tapped into a very real part of the human condition that is seldom described accurately.
Immediately met with the gritty tones of “WANDERLOST”, the album kicks off with classic punk vitality partnered with the question “Am I Good Enough?” which hits just as hard and deep as you would expect. The narrative of “TIELUCK” could be an EP on its own, a desperate defence mechanism to stay distracted from reality. “ALL ABOUT YOU” and “100 MILLION SHEEP” offer an uncomfortable look into a frayed mind without sleep or healthy coping tools. By this point, the need to hug someone really sets in. Amongst the many overwhelming moments, there are glimmers of light – “LIKE HELIUM BALLOONS” for one.
By the halfway point of Promise to Disappear, the protagonist is becoming aware of their need to ask for help and the insurmountable difficulty to do so. “FADED SCARF” tackles the heartbreak of not just losing a person, but losing the moments and memories that are now tinged with sadness. By the time “SOLACE” and “MIDNIGHT SUN” roll, it is clear that any comfort is short-lived when living with open wounds. “SPITSHINE” hurts in a different way as the narrator reverts back into themselves to hide their pain. As much as anyone wants a happy ending, that is not the nature of grief as is exemplified on “FOLLOWING PROTOCOL”. Once death has thrust itself directly into your reality – it permeates every day of life until the end.

The Promise to Disappear carries the weight and significance of the less extemporated human experience. FakeYou pulls no punches and has delivered a beautiful, honest, vulnerable, and devastating debut.
