Built upon heavy mystical lore, modern metal band IT Cometh explore new realms of shadows and magick on their new full length debut. House of Midnight is an intense journey through a world that mirrors our own, filled with ritualistic allure and the band’s fullest sound to date.
Draped and painted in stark contrast to this reality, It Cometh presents themselves as vassals cloaked in otherworldly presence. Donning their signature corpse paint and black attire, the band make a statement wherever they roam. Carrying with them heavy technical acumen and – assumedly – a Britannica-sized book of demonology, It Cometh do not come to rock but to reckon. Releasing their first EP God Hotel in 2019, It Cometh immediately made their mark with a sound that was both daunting and tantalizingly welcoming. They remained relatively quiet on the release front until unleashing their full length debut House of Midnight on July 17.
House of Midnight expands the Barrie-based band’s intensity and melody-infused sound, and has taken the mythos of It Cometh to new heights. With the addition of a second guitarist, It Cometh have meticulously woven their heavy tones into a narrative that doesn’t rely on painstaking exposition. It Cometh’s Charlie Sackett (vocalist, lyricist, artist) elaborates:
“There are six pillars of the House of Midnight, entities that represent the cardinal directions, the celestial(above) and the cthonic(below). Each one is encountered by the magician in order, being given gifts to aid them in their path while calling in the directions of the summoning circle. Once the circle is cast, the magician transcends and Balsamus is summoned.”
Approaching their full length debut as a concept album is match made in…well, wherever the hell It Cometh are trying to get to. As a concept album, House of Midnight only contends with itself as a narrative and the band uses this free range to explore their sound as well as their storytelling. While the story focuses on The Magician’s journey to enlightenment, It Cometh have fully realized their own potential.
House of Midnight was a monumental swing for It Cometh as both a debut and a concept album – and it was a swing that connected precisely. Remaining loyal to the heavy tones and brooding atmosphere of God Hotel, the album also offers glimmers of thematic lightness. While still packed with crushing instrumentation and infernal screaming, House of Midnight plays with juxtaposition with its major-key flourishes and clean vocals.
If you ever wondered what The Pagemaster would be like if McCauley Culkin read The Necronomicon and Dio was in charge of the soundtrack – It Cometh’s House of Midnight is damn near spot on.
