Modern Metalcore In A 2-D World: Cana release music video for latest single “Counterpain”

Striking a nostalgic chord with their SNES-inspired music video, Cana bring their modern take on 2000s metalcore in “Counterpain”. Rich with 16-Bit pixilation and screen flashes that take fans back to their parents’ basement for late night hangs, the Bangkok-based band continue to elevate and bolster their position as prominent purveyors of Thailand metalcore.

Released on May 30 in support of the single released on May 1, “Counterpain” is the latest and greatest addition to Cana’s catalogue of absolute bangers. The music video is a cross between Skitchin’, Mortal Kombat, and 2000s Crabcore music videos that show that Cana do not take themselves too seriously, even though each release demonstrates infectious growth both technically and sonically. Like a fever-dream that almost everyone has had growing up in the 90s and 2000s, the video opens with the band being pulled into a 2-D world, navigating a treacherous highway set against the vaporwave hues of the background cityscape. The video acts as a wild juxtaposition to the song that centers on hopelessness and the daunting, unending cycle of a race that seems impossible to win.

“Can we be saved from this endless race? / There’s nothing left to say And I don’t think that they would understand”
– “Counterpain”

The blistering guitars, intricate drum patterns, and switching between screamed and clean vocals carry the listener through the heavy emotional narrative supported by powerful instrumentation. Cana have very clear influences that strike home to the North American ear, but they are part of a rich history of Thai heavy acts. As players in this robust heavy community, Cana stands amongst other great modern heavy-hitters as Retrospect, Sweet Mullett, Lamosonic, and the newly minted Nirvrot.

“They not making these vibes that we are making right now. R&B infused uptempo vibe tingled with some Afro flair…. Who’s doing that? That’s what I’m here for. That’s what EO SZN is here for. The vibes for the gym, the club, to chill, the arenas, to inspire and this one right here is for the drive. Night driving to be exact. Try it out. I haven’t steered you wrong yet!”

“Counterpain” marks the seventh track, also their first release of 2026, under the Cana banner and brings their signature certified heat to the ears of those who grew up blasting bands like A Day To Remember, Underoath, and Sleeping With Sirens. With a relatively small catalogue of songs to their name, Cana continue to hold quality above quantity and each new track has been well worth the wait. Following the landmark release of “UNI (featuring YOHYE)” last year, Cana have begun to find traction in markets outside of their region, and it is only a matter of time before their music crosses borders, oceans, and finds home in the ears of soon-be-fans across the globe.
