Enough Resilience, Its Time To React: Today Junior release new single “Keep On Pushing Me”

Released today, the pre-revolution fuzz-punk anthem “Keep On Pushing Me” marks an edgy and timely  transition for Today Junior as they reach the point where standing up isn’t enough – you have to start pushing back. Juxtaposing their uniquely danceable sound that weaves together elements of wavy psych, energetic punk, and surf rock flow with dire messaging about the rising difficulty to survive, “Keep On Pushing Me” is a record scratch moment for Today Junior.

Often associated with warm tones, explorative lyricism, and a melodic cool, the Boston-based trio have kept up the abundance of fuzz in their sound, but “Keep On Pushing Me” is a clear-as-day reminder that things aren’t getting better and it’s time to address it head on. Demonstrating a lyrical departure, Today Junior have reached the limit of resilience and have tipped into the realm of necessary reaction. As guitarist and lead vocalist Harry O’Toole laments: “Times are tough / Can’t pay rent / Working for a meal / Am I alive or dead?”

At a time when the majority of people can barely get by, let alone get ahead, Today Junior has delivered a song for the surviving class that is equally pointed and pissed off. There is an exhaustive timbre in the vocals that rises and crackles with purpose as the song develops. Adding fuel to the fire is the incendiary guitar work that explodes just when it needs to. “Keep On Pushing Me” by Today Junior is the band’s third release in support of their forthcoming LP, and the new single is their most socially resonant to date.

“To us, it’s about not giving up when it feels like you are being pushed off the path you’re trying to achieve. It’s about being resilient and having determination while following your passion, or simply just living your life. Sometimes, it feels there’s something getting in the way, especially in the world and country we’re living in today.”

If there is a silver lining to the mounting affairs of the day, it is that great music comes out of imposing hardship. Just as the music scene exploded during the Nixon and George W. Bush administrations, songs like “Keep On Pushing Me” carry more weight and relevance. As Today Junior continue to synch up with the rising tides, their music will be essential to remaining steadfast against the odds. Maybe you didn’t think that a band that shares its name with an Adam Sandler quote would be dropping truth bombs, but hey, weirder things have happened.
