Early 2000s Emo with Hooks for Days – “The Ways We Remain” by Idolvein

Capturing the rich essence of a bittersweet nostalgia, “The Ways We Remain” exhibits some of the most contemplative lyrics ever penned by Idolvein’s singer and guitarist Caelan Rivers. Combining pop-rock melodies with theatrical synth and strings, thunderous drums with dynamic bass lines, the band’s latest offering borders upon the sounds of early 2000s emo whilst retaining their signature densely arranged sound.

This new single speaks of a present that cannot be untangled from the past, illustrating the subtle torments of someone holding onto an unresolving contemplation of how things could’ve been different. With the chorus refrains summarising this sentiment, herein lies the mourning of a history that never existed. Instead, it’s accompanied by a brooding sense of longing that knows better than to ask too much.

Idolvein tap into this emotional delivery not only through the track’s lyrical output, but also in the mirrored architecture of its instrumental writing. Sections of bass-led grooves, ambient synths and clean guitars meet, drawing parity with contemporary artists such as The 1975Balu Brigada and The Midnight. With that said, the Nottingham-based outfit are still certain to acknowledge their heavier roots. As the song’s melodic throughline establishes itself within both the vocal and guitar lines, it’s interrupted by moments of driving rhythmic complexity, resulting in one of the band’s most striking singles so far.

This is another confident step in the evolution of Idolvein, showcasing the sound of a band that knows exactly the ground it’s covered, yet unwavering in the ambiguity of what may follow.

The Ways We Remain” is available on all platforms Friday 5th June.
