In support of their latest EP, Boston indie-punk outfit Something Sneaky released a nostalgia-inducing music video for their lead track “Stevie’s Here”. Feeling like a throwback to MTV (or MuchMusic for Canadians with basic cable), the new music video is rich with concert footage and what might be perceived as mundane activities, but it serves as a warm reminder that what may look like nothing in particular means everything in hindsight.
Like old friends who have all the best dirt on you and will take them to their grave, Something Sneaky appears when you need them most, and this time they brought a stellar EP that was 8 years in the making. Released in May, Old Notes distilled the most beloved traits the band is known for into 5 new tracks including “Stevie’s Here”. The whole EP is tinged with nostalgic fuzz and a reckless energy of days gone past, but maintains a pulsing vein of kinetic power that comes from well-worn triumphs and a few scrapes from character-testing obstacles.
As the lead track and subject for the band’s latest music video, “Stevie’s Here” is a love letter to the neighbourhoods where Something Sneaky came into existence, evolved, and continue to be stalwarts of the music scene. As a nod to the many venues and hangout haunts that hosted the band that had to fight to exist between the underground and the mainstream, the music video is laced with footage around Allston, Scituate, and concert footage from their EP release party at Deep Cuts in Medford. More importantly, the video is a timepiece that shows a group of friends that also happen to make great music. With shots from an arcade, snippets from Billy Madison, backyard haircuts, and driving around in an old van, the music video contains everyday moments that may be treasured memories to those who experience them.
After nearly 15 years of making music together, Something Sneaky are poster children for resilience and integrity. When making music took a backseat to other priorities (or pandemics), the members of Something Sneaky continued to grow and experience life in ways that could be instilled back into their music. Old Notes maye have taken longer than expected to release, but all great things are worth the wait. And if “Stevie’s Here” teaches us anything, is that time spent with the people you like the most, doing what you love, and in the places you treasure – everything will be alright.
