The Ragged Jubilee – “Usually I’ll write something and then bring it to the band and we will work it out together.” – Interview

The Ragged Jubilee answered our questions about their songwriting process. Let’s see what they have to say!

Q:What’s up with your band name? Is there a story behind it?

A: Yeah, we were looking for a band name and had basically gone through about a hundred different ideas when a good friend of the band, Ryan Delmore, told us that we sounded like a Ragged Jubilee. So thank you Ryan Delmore haha.

Q:Tell us about your musical past, would you tell us about your early years?

A: Well the band started in 2007 as a folk rock band. I was playing acoustic guitar and we had banjo doing most of the leads. The early years were mostly just trying to play as many shows as possible and write that one great song that people would remember and really feel.

Q:How would you describe your sound?

A: Heavy Rock And Roll

Q:Which artists have the biggest influence on your sound?

A: The beauty of this band is that everyone listens to very different music and draws inspiration from very different sources but personally I love Neil Young, Buddy Guy, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Them Crooked Vultures.

Q:What’s the last song you listened to?

A: Midnight Lover, Link Wray live at winterland 1974.

Q:What’s your source for hearing new music?

A: I still think word of mouth is the best way to find out about new music. It’s a great way for someone to turn you on to something that you may never have listened to otherwise.

Q:Who is your dream producer?

A: I love this question. Either Jimmy Page or Jack White.

Q:If you could collaborate with anyone who would it be?

A:I’ve got about a hundred answers for this question but again I’d have to go with Jimmy Page. He’s a musical wizard.

Q:What led you to music, and what motivates you to keep making it?

A: I fell in love with music as a child. What led me to it was the way that it made me feel. It was like something was pulling on my soul. That still motivates me to continue. I want to make people feel that as well.

Q:Tell us about the songwriting process. How does it all come together?

A:Usually I’ll write something and then bring it to the band and we will work it out together. Whether that’s changing a part or adding something. We trust each other’s ideas and concepts.

Q:How do you connect with your audience? What’s the easiest way for them to connect with you?

A: I think that live shows are the easiest way on both sides. We feed off of crowd energy and I think that a crowd feeds off of the bands energy so our live shows are high excitement and very high energy.
