Introducing Shoreline Shoegaze: Hoperfilly release debut LP ‘Let The Time Pass By’

Emerging from the lush tree lines surrounding kilometers of shoreline across the Kawartha Lakes, Hoperfilly bring both youth and timeless influence on their debut LP. Conceived in the halls of high school and recorded over the last 2 years in a bedroom, Let The Time Pass By stands as a testament to the band’s DIY ethos and passion for sharing their brand of indie-tinged shoegaze.

Releasing just 3 singles and a short collection of live songs, Hoperfilly bypassed the traditional EP route and delivered a full-fledged 12 track album that can barely contain the band’s raw energy. Let The Time Pass By employs many of the beloved characteristics of shoegaze and does so with an ease beyond the band members’ years. The guitars and drums work together to create a reverb-heavy atmosphere across the majority of tracks that carry the obscured vocals into a place that feels tense and melancholic.

A standout attribute of Let The Time Pass By is the album’s dynamic track listing. Opening with “Hoperfilly (Intro)”, the listener is immediately introduced to the tones and atmosphere that will continue to permeate the album’s runtime. Balancing the more expansive and concussive songs like “Demolition”, “Differences In Us”, and “Radio” are “Bigger Picture” and “Politics” that carefully adjust the tempo back towards more ethereal waters. Let The Time Pass By stands as an excellent example that DIY does not have to be synonymous with laziness or half-hearted attempt.

The overall sound of Let The Time Pass By harkens back to the classic wall-of-sound style, but every element gets moments to shine. The guitars and melodies on “Read It To Me” and “Bigger Picture” are examples of the band’s freedom to explore space and time regardless of genre. A special mention to the drums that hold down the album from top to bottom without overpowering the overall scope of the songs.

In a relatively short time, Hoperfilly have created a name for themselves as a live act not to be missed and have funneled a portion of that energy into a thoughtfully conceived debut LP. With a larger budget for production and mastering, Hoperfilly will no doubt be forerunners of shoreline shoegaze. Shoregaze. Nailed It.
