Strange Dream took a bit of time to answer our questions about their music and their songwriting process. Let’s see what they have to say!
First off, What’s up with your name? Is there a story behind it?
The orgin of the band name really stems from the name of one of our favorite songs by
WITCH – we thought it sounded good after different names were thrown about.
Tell us about your musical past, would you tell us about your early years?
To be honest these are our early years, weve been together about a year and plan to
release songs violently. We’ve both been in bands before and weren’t happy with how
they were progessing so we decided to take the leap and form Strange Dream.
How would you describe your sound?
We are trying to not stick to a particular sound as we don’t want to shoe box ourselves.
Our first single ‘Orange’ was a psych jam instrumental with latin beats where as our
most recent single ‘Miss Annie’ we would describe it more of a shoegaze nightmare.
Our next single is something again completely different.
Which artists have the biggest influence on your sound?
We would say the some of our influences would be Californian sounding bands like
Allah-las, Los bitchos, Mystic Braves & Nightbeats but were trying to give it a more
industrial & gritty sound.
What’s the last song you listened to?
The last songs Virgil last listened to was Farfias New Ep & the last song Vincent
listened to was Mint Julep by Nino Ferrer
What’s your source for hearing new music?
We usually just talk about new music and suggest it to each other, we also go to a lot of
local gigs put on by Happy Daze & Sour Grapes who always have amazing line ups.
One of the last gigs we went to was Ghost Woman at Yes basement who were
amazing. We also went to Big Thief at the Ritz another great band.
Who is your dream producer?
Our dream producer would have to be the legendry Rick Rubin, we recently watched
321 Macartney and thought he would just be perfect to work with. Also Butch Vig who
produced some insane albums.
If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?
Collectively we have come to the conclusion of Posh Spice we really could do with
some new outfits and I hear her son is a great photographer.
What led you to music, and what motivates you to keep making it?
Without a doubt…existential dread.
Tell us about the songwriting process. How does it all come together?
We just jam our songs and work them out. We then separately work on them & bring it
back to each other and try and get the final structure. To be honest we sort of have to
cut each other off as we both think the songs are not finished but we usually do quite
well in telling the other when the tune is finished.
How do you connect with your audience? What is the easiest way for them to
connect with you?
We connect physically, spiritually & on Instagram/twitter.
What’s next for you?
We have a backlog of songs that we have recorded so were going to release them
within the next year or so. We have had some conversations about some ridiculous gigs
that we can play which we are very excited about.
Anything else you’d like to add or let us know about?
Keep those minced pies peeled as we’ll have out next single ‘Mirrah’ will be out in
roughly six weeks!
Thanks for your time we appreciate you, you beautiful bastard.
