AlienBlaze – “I think I write my songs in an unusual way, in the sense that I have to start with the lyrics first, not the music. Sometimes just the title of the song comes first.” – Interview

AlienBlaze told us about their music and their collaboration with OmenXIII. Let’s see what they have to say!

First off, What’s up with your name? Is there a story behind it?

My name is Blaze and my artist name is AlienBlaze. I added the ‘alien’ part because I got very sick when I was 14 and missed a lot of school, which left me feeling very alienated from my peers.

Tell us about your musical past, would you tell us about your early years?

I’ve always listened to a lot of music from lots of different decades. Growing up, everything from 90s grunge to 70s glam rock to 00s pop. I’ve also read loads of artists autobiographies, such as Chrissie Hynde’s and Debbie Harry’s. So it’s all been a huge influence towards creating my own musical sound.

How would you describe your sound?

The best way to describe my music I feel is ‘genre-fluid’. I love to take inspirations from lots of different genres and combine them. For example, on my latest release ‘Lovesick’, I have created a rock rap hybrid in collaboration with OmenXIII which was amazing.

Which artists have the biggest influence on your sound?

So many different artists from many different genres! I would definitely have to say The Cure, Bring Me The Horizon and Nothing But Thieves, but also artists such as Trippie Redd, RAYE and Billie Eilish.

What’s the last song you listened to?

I’m listening to a lot of 00s music at the moment, so probably something by Girls Aloud or Sugababes.

What’s your source for hearing new music?

Mainly the editorial playlists on Spotify, such as the Misfits 2.0 playlist which I was just on the front cover of. I’ve also discovered a lot of new artists coming up through the scene who come to my shows.

Who is your dream producer?

100% my dream producer has to be Mike Sabath. I absolutely love what Mike and RAYE created on her album ‘My 21st Century Blues’, with songs like ‘Hard Out Here’.

If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?

I absolutely love collaborating with others artists and it’s something I definitely want to do more of, collaborating with OmenXIII on my song ‘Lovesick’ was amazing. I would absolutely love to do a song with Robert Smith from The Cure, Bring Me The Horizon, CamelPhat or Willow to name a few. I think collaborations are an amazing way to get a different sound with your music and combine different styles / genres.

What led you to music, and what motivates you to keep making it?

Being an artist is something that just kind of happened! Originally I just wanted to be a lead guitarist in a band and I first picked up the guitar when I was 15. I wanted to be able to play like my guitar inspirations Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains and Slash. But I found getting a band together was very difficult, so I decided to learn to sing as well and found myself making more alt pop / alt rock music as just an artist. I still play guitar on stage at my shows though.

Tell us about the songwriting process. How does it all come together?

I think I write my songs in an unusual way, in the sense that I have to start with the lyrics first, not the music. Sometimes just the title of the song comes first. I then build all the music around the lyrics. The lyrics are very important to me and I always want them to be poetic.

How do you connect with your audience? What is the easiest way for them to
connect with you?

Mainly on Instagram and Twitter, which is @alienblaze on both. I’ve been using TikTok a bit more recently though, my new song Lovesick was added to their New Music playlist and I’m so happy to see TikTok are being so supportive of the rock genre.

What’s next for you?

Hopefully more collaborations and planning my first headline show. Also releasing a new song in July.
