Moosic Entertainment: Do you have a story behind your artist name?
Cruel Miracle comes out of the notion of something that’s beautiful but also a curse. Like the problem child, or the discovering atomic energy. We’ve all been the black sheep of the family at times – we are a Cruel Miracle.
Tell us a bit about your music journey. How has it shaped you?
Music has shaped everything in our lives. It’s the one friend that is always there for you when you’re down and out. Without music, none of us would be alive.
How would you describe your sound to someone unfamiliar with it?
We’re hard rock at our core, but we take inspiration from all genres. Individually, we all bring different elements to the table, and we come together to fuse sounds from all kinds of music into our own sound.
What drew you to the genre/instruments you’re playing right now?
We all come from musical families. At some level it was a big foundation in our upbringings. But rock n’ roll has always been in our lives – we can’t remember a time before rock n’ roll. It’s always been there.
What inspires you to write music?
For Steadfast, our latest studio album release, which came out last summer, we were inspired by all the crazy shit during the pandemic. We had to write the music to try and stay sane, and stay true to ourselves as we came out of that world.
Would you tell us about your current project, album/EP, or song you’re promoting?
In late April we released a music video to “Stone,” the intro track to the Steadfast album. This song is special for us — when we wrote it, we knew the tune would set the tone for the record. It’s raw and in your face, but also melodic. “Stone” is what we want people to think of when they think of Cruel Miracle.
What do you want listeners to take away from listening to your music?
We hope that people relate to the songs in their own way. They have personal meaning to us, but we leave it up to interpretation. Once you release a piece of art, it’s no longer “yours” – it belongs to the people.
Who are your top three artists right now? If that’s not a fair question, what’s your favorite song right now?
Let’s do one favorite artist from each of us in the band:
Charlie Black, bass and vocals: Rival Sons
Doug Hendler, guitar: Deep Purple
Aaron Leonard, keys and backing vocals: Screaming Trees
Joe Cook, drums: Queens of the Stone Age
