14 years after their debut album and an 11 year hiatus, A Sea of Gold & Burgundy are poised to release their second full-length album Monarch Mosaic. Releasing Friday, November 21, the new album draws on themes of growth, transcendence and transformation. This Niagara region trio have grown immensely, infusing mysticism and philosophy with folk-inspired storytelling, soulful delivery and moments of jazzy flourishes. Together, Monarch Mosaic is a gem of modern folk music – richly textured with heartfelt nuance.

While a significant amount of time had passed between 2011’s self-titled debut album and now, Carl David Onofrio, Aaron Berger and Nathanial Goold never stopped creating. Writing, recording, and performing as solo acts or with fellow artists, the members of A Sea of Gold & Burgundy continued to learn, explore, and hone their individual approaches to music. Rekindling the band in 2022 and quickly rediscovering their chemistry, Monarch Mosaic is proof that time apart holds no sway over passion and purpose. Bringing a decade’s worth of learned experiences to the studio has resulted in a sprawling and universally connective album derived from deep reflection and creative experimentation.
C.D. Onofrio explains the title and inspiration for the album:
“Monarch Mosaic is an album of recordings made between Monterrey, Mexico and Niagara Falls, Canada. We celebrate that the monarch butterflies travel between both places. The butterflies provide symbols of transcendence and transformation through the growth and life that they live out. From an early life in a form very different than what they become, from a dark chrysalis to spreading their wings traversing great distances. Our album goes on a journey and we hope you will join us.
The album is a mosaic in the sense that the music carries different styles, attitudes, lyrical perspectives and different lyrical approaches, and comes from the varied perspectives that we bring into our music. We hope that you will enjoy sharing and celebrating the birth of this recording, the culmination of countless hours of passion, work and energy to make it happen. We’re grateful for the full team that brought this work to life from the believers that keep us going to collaborators, producers, engineers, instrumentalists, editors, mixers, artists, and more.”
The wisdom garnered from the time spent together and apart is apparent throughout the album. Seasoned harmonies between vocals and instruments is a thing of beauty, and would be a welcome addition to your favorite outdoor location. Preceded by singles “We Shall Rise To This”, “Signs of Spring”, “Flame Dancing”, “Monarch Butterfly”, and “Just Be”, Monarch Mosaic will be available this Friday, November 21 across all streaming platforms and as a physical release.
