Maggie Cubillos – “I’ve been singing ever since I could talk and was put into voice lessons at an early age.” – Interview

Presenting Maggie Cubillos! She’s done it all, and she’s even attending the prestigious Berklee College of Music! Check her out and let’s see what she has to say!

First off, What’s up with your name? Is there a story behind it?

My name is Maggie Cubillos!

Tell us about your musical past, would you tell us about your early years?

I’ve been singing ever since I could talk and was put into voice lessons at an early age. I did a lot of musical theater growing up as well but singing was always the thing I loved most. My parents are both huge music lovers so I was always surrounded by it and I think they really influenced the love I have for it as well. Their support really pushed me to continue pursuing singing through elementary, middle, and high school and now I’m lucky enough to get to pursue it at a collegiate level at Berklee College of Music which has been so cool.

How would you describe your sound?

I’d say my sound is a mix of singer-songwriter/acoustic sounds with different pop elements. All the artists I love create music that’s primarily focused on lyrics with simpler production and I’d say my music does the same.

Which artists have the biggest influence on your sound?

Sara Bareilles and Adele were huge influences on me growing up and I think their voices and styles have heavily influenced the music I create. Artists like Gracie Abrams,  Taylor Swift, and JP Saxe have all influenced my writing a ton too and I really admire the way they express different emotions through their songs.

What’s the last song you listened to?

The last song I listened to was “Nobody Gets Me” by SZA. I know everyone is obsessed with her new album right now and so am I! It’s amazing and that song is my favorite off of the album.

What’s your source for hearing new music?

I find a lot of music on Tiktok and Instagram as well as listening to my Discover Weekly on Spotify. Also a lot of my friends are huge music lovers as well so we share a lot of new artists with each other.

Who is your dream producer?

I would love to work with Jack Antonoff. I love what he did on Taylor Swift’s “Folklore” and “Evermore” albums and I think working with someone with so much knowledge about the industry would be amazing.

If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?

Phoebe Bridgers! I love her music so much and it would be a dream come true to collaborate with her. The way she commands the room with her voice and lyrics is incredible.

What led you to music, and what motivates you to keep making it?

I was never really interested in sports growing up haha so music was what I was drawn to. I love connecting with different people and from an early age I realized that music was my way to do that. Getting to write songs about things I’ve gone through and having them relate to people is such a cool experience and is why I keep doing what I do. It helps make everyone feel a little less alone.

Tell us about the songwriting process. How does it all come together?

I normally come up with melodies and lyrics first. I record little voice memos on my phone and write lyric ideas in my notes and then will sit down at the piano and sort through them all. Sometimes I’ll come up with a chorus first and have to write verses or vice versa but lyrics definitely come first to me before the chords and music.

How do you connect with your audience? What is the easiest way for them to connect with you?

I’m very active on my social medias so anyone can reach me on those! I primarily use Tiktok and Instagram but you you can find me everywhere at @maggie.cubillos.
