Guffery decided to give us some insight on what his hit song “Anxiety” was about. We appreciate it, because it’s a phenomenal track!
Anxiety’s Diary – The story of “Anxiety” by Guffery
When I sat down to write one night, I was running through song ideas, jotting down lines and I started thinking about my friend. She had talked about her anxiety and that led me back to my own struggles with depression and anxiety and facing them in therapy. She wasn’t talking in metaphors or anything, just raw emotion and I wanted to express that feeling of being ready to change. Changing my way of thinking, how I handle situations and getting myself to a healthier place, but I also wanted to add that anxiety inside me that reminds me that I shouldn’t change. “You’re good as you are, so what’s the point?” The message in the verses start with the “I’m ready” part but then shift into self-doubt, depression, the anxiousness that swallows me when I want to change.
I wrote and recorded the verses in a couple of hours, did a rough mix and sent it over to eRok4a. He sent it back a few hours later with some harmonizing he had done on the chorus. Writing a good chorus has always been a challenge for me, I guess you could say it makes me anxious. The harmonizing he added helped put the words right there in my mind and I typed out the chorus in a text to him. After a few email exchanges we had a final version of the song. He added a new bass, made some changes to the arrangement and I loved it. We dropped a song from RECLUSIVE and added this one to the tracklist.
I wanted to end the second verse with a sort of ultimatum to myself. I had to make a choice, change or stay inside this distorted bubble of comfort I’ve built where I can rationalize all of my bad choices as some type of self-preservation. I think anyone listening to a song can and should interpret the lyrics however they’d prefer, but when I wrote and hear the chorus to Anxiety I don’t think of a person that I miss, or desire, I think of depression and anxiety, the voices that have convinced me they’re keeping me safe and they’re all I need. The ones that I have given power to. There are a lot of people having similar internal struggles, but you can reclaim power and you can overcome your demons. As much as this is a song I wrote about mental health, it is truly a song about finding hope.
