Caroline Romano – “It’s a little different every time. It often starts with an idea or a phrase I’ve been hearing in my head over and over.” – Interview

Caroline Romano took a moment out of her busy schedule to tell us about her music and how she makes it. Let’s see what she has to say!

Tell us about your musical past, would you tell us about your early years?

I started writing music because I started journaling after school. When I was around 12 I started writing about my day, or whatever middle school emotions I was experiencing. I started playing guitar at an early age simply out of interest, so I began to put those journal entries to melodies on my guitar. From there I was simply addicted to  songwriting. I was thirteen when I came to Nashville for the first time and started to play open mic nights around the city, and I never really left.

How would you describe your sound?

I would describe my sound as folk lyrics mixed with pop tracks and rock drums.

Which artists have the biggest influence on your sound?

Holly Humberstone, Noah Kahan, Taylor Swift, and The 1975 have all had a huge impact on my sound.

What’s the last song you listened to?

“intellectual greed” by Brakence

What’s your source for hearing new music?

Honestly I get most of my new music from friends! Some of my best friends are producers, writers, and artists, so they’re always showing me the coolest stuff I know I would never find on my own.

Who is your dream producer?

Rob Milton is someone I’ve always wanted to work with, I think he has such an incredible sonic mind. Dan Nigro as well. Both of those guys are behind some of my all time favorite records.

If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?

Noah Kahan. He’s my all time favorite lyricist, and probably my biggest musical inspiration currently. I’ve been a fan of his for many years now, so it would just be a dream come true to collaborate with him.

What led you to music, and what motivates you to keep making it?

I only ever feel like the realest version of myself when I’m making music. I truly just don’t know what I would do if it wasn’t this. I need it to function, I need it like water. That sounds like an exaggeration, but writing songs really is just essential to my life.

Tell us about the songwriting process. How does it all come together?

It’s a little different every time. It often starts with an idea or a phrase I’ve been hearing in my head over and over. Sometimes it’s a couple sentences, or a poem I’ve written in my phone’s notes app. Depending on where I hear it going, sometimes I’ll sit down and put the idea to  a melody on guitar or piano at home. Other times I’ll bring the idea straight to a session with my producer, just because the track needs to be there to write the entire song. Sometimes it takes 3 hours and sometimes it takes 30 minutes. That’s what I love about songwriting, in that the process itself is just as unique as the story you’re telling.

How do you connect with your audience? What is the easiest way for them to connect with you?

I love connecting with people who have or haven’t heard my music in any way I can. I’d say one of my favorite ways to connect with my audience is through live shows. It’s not something you can replicate with anything else I don’t think, that feeling of connecting with an audience live and in real time on stage and after the show. I will say I love how easy social media has made it to connect with people on a personal level almost instantly. I’ve gotten to get to know people I may have never gotten the chance to talk to through platforms like Instagram and TikTok, which is incredible. I’m super grateful for any way I can connect with an audience.

What’s next for you?

I’m releasing my first EP on July 28th, which I’m beyond excited about. It’s called ‘A Brief Epic,’ and it tells the long but short story of a relationship I was in last year. I wrote it over the course of a few months last summer/fall, and I can’t wait for it to be out. I’m really proud and excited for this next chapter

Anything else you’d like to add or let us know about?

Thank you so much for having me!  I appreciate your time. There are a lot of new things coming that I’m really excited about, including the release of ‘A Brief Epic.’ You can also follow me on any social media platform to hear what’s next!
