Jennifer Alvarado took some time to tell us about her music and how she makes it. Let’s see what she has to say!
Tell us about your musical past, would you tell us about your early years?
I was singing before I could fully talk. Music has just always been a part of my life. At age 4 or 5, I began making up little songs and recording them on my Fisher Price tape recorder. I then got involved with choir and the arts program at school. Around 13, I began playing guitar to help me with songwriting. As a teenager I began leading worship and forming musical ensembles at church. I went on to start recording my music and pursuing Christian music in my early 20s before making the switch back to Country and Pop music.
How would you describe your sound?
My music is a blend of 90’s country storytelling and Alanis Morrissette angst in my lyrics. I grew up listening to everything as far as musical styles, but especially loved grunge, classic rock and country music.
Which artists have the biggest influence on your sound?
Soundwise, The Eagles, Tom Petty, Deana Carter and other singer/songwriter Americana and Classic Rock artists have had the greatest influence. Vocal wise, I have always loved big voices like: Celine, Whitney, and Martina McBride.
What’s the last song you listened to?
Afterglow by Taylor Swift
What’s your source for hearing new music?
I am constantly on the road and listening to Spotify. I usually just click on a random playlist and there is no rhyme or reason to what I am listening too.
Who is your dream producer?
Honestly, I really love my producer Ricky. We’ve been working together for over eight years and he gets my vision. There are plenty of people I would love to work with, just to see how they do what they do, but I also think I’m incredibly lucky to have found Ricky.
If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?
As long as I respect the vision and product of a writer or artist, I will work with anyone. Obviously there are some you feel more comfortable with, but I believe every person and opportunity can be a learning experience, so I welcome any collaborations….as long as I like what they are doing.
What led you to music, and what motivates you to keep making it?
I am an only child. I am also introverted. Music was my way to express my feelings and process situations in my life. I felt comfortable sharing through music. I am motivated to keep doing it because I know the importance other musicians and their words and music had on me growing up. I want to be a voice for those that may feel alone or misunderstood.
Tell us about the songwriting process. How does it all come together?
Honestly, every song is different. It may start with a lyric that I can’t get out of my head. It may start with a really upsetting situation that I just need to process. Overall it starts with a lyric that leads to a hook that I then build a story around. After that, I let the studio process write the rest of the story. I want the music to help present the story.
How do you connect with your audience? What is the easiest way for them to connect with you?
What’s next for you?
I’ve been touring a lot this year. My biggest reason is to be able to connect one on one with the audience. I like to tell stories and speak with the audience. I want to know what is going on in their life. Social media is also a way of connecting.

I am also working on a new Christmas EP that will be out in November and beginning work on a new Country project that will be a throwback to that nostalgic 90’s Country sound that I love so much.
