Do you have a story behind your artist name?
My Dad and I (Levi) were at IHOP together and came up with it while looking at the menu.
Tells us a bit about recording this album, what was the process like?
We recorded this over 8 months with our friend and producer of this album Adam Miller. We recorded it at his house and pretty much took over his upstairs twice a week for 8months haha. There was a lot of learning while recording this. We had never done an album, and it was the biggest thing we’d done with Adam so there was a lot of figuring stuff out and trying to hone in on the sound we were going for.
How would you describe your sound to someone unfamiliar with it?
It’s pretty standard indie rock in my opinion, we listen to a lot of 90s bands like pavement and built to spill and I think that comes through in the songs. People started saying “bootgaze” after listening to this album which I assume is country shoegaze. I don’t know kinda sounds cool, we’re from Nashville so I guess it fits. Someone also told me that our songs have a “melancholic yet youthful optimism that comes through”, I wish I came up with that description.
What drew you to the genre /instruments you’re playing right now?
Just the music we like, Carmen and I have both always played guitar, and liked the same stuff. We both have phases and I think it comes out in how we play. She’s on like Stones craze right now haha.
What inspires you to write music?
My friends honestly, I am competitive and one of them will write something like way better than I could ever write and I’ll hear it and be like “alright, I gotta go home and grind”. All of us are like that in our friend group I think, it helps us all get better. I saw Emma Ogier play last night, I hadn’t seen her play before, but the whole time I was like “I gotta figure out how to write choruses like she does”.
Would you tell us about your current project, album/EP, or song you’re promoting?
This is our debut album Detroit. 10 tracks that we wrote after getting home from our first winter tour.
What do you want listeners to take away from listening to your music?
I’m not sure, take away what you want, I guess. I hope it sounds like we tried haha.
Who are your top three artists right now?
- Alex G
- Pavement
- Dinosaur Jr.
