Strutting Through the Tough Times and Kicking Some Teeth In: Poolgirl release sophomore EP

Slashing their way through suffocating decorum and embodying the essence of modern riot grrl punk, Poolgirl and their new EP delivers harsh critiques inside diabolical, catchy songs. Released on May 15, Still Not Getting What I Want is a well-timed strut through a harsh reality, and culminates in a stylish kick right in the teeth.

Hailing from Tiohtià:ke (Montreal), Poolgirl is one of those rare bands that exist out of their own time and produce songs that sound too good to be new. Their debut EP I Can’t Swim was released in 2024 and immediately met with acclaim for its raw, funky, and powerful expression of their combined talent for making music that moved people (emotionally and physically). On Still Not Getting What I Want, Poolgirl have elevated their sound beyond the influences of acts that came before, and now stands as an influence in its own right.

Opening with the insanely relatable track “Money”, Poolgirl knows what it means to be broke, hungry, but not willing to let that stop them from going out to cause a little chaos. The breakdown and repeated shouting of “Just need a little more money” feels like 2026 in a nutshell. Their single “Triple A” is an anthem for anyone struggling with malaise, but in dire need to get things done. The fuzzy guitars drive the listener out of stagnation into a frenzy…for better or worse is a coin toss at best. “Clean” is an example of the band’s sharp storytelling and versatile instrumentation. Did it need the cowbell? You’re damn right it did. The dynamic “You Make Me Sick” is a pointed, alt-rock track that pairs well with the keying of a car or burning personal belongings. Rounding off the EP is “Checkout”, a simmering track that acts as the perfect button to walk away to and leaves behind the anger and animosity that coursed through the preceding 4 tracks.

Still Not Getting What I Want finds Poolgirl at their most dialed-in to date, balancing the ferocity of punk and hardcore with smart, stinging lyricism mixed with instrumentation that is as fuzzy as it is funky. The situations that inspired the new EP may be traumatizing to most, but in the hands of Poolgirl, they are all weapons in the band’s ever-growing arsenal.
